Reading

In Reading, students have been exploring a range of books about iconic Australians. They have focused on synthesising by combining their prior knowledge with new information to develop and change their thinking.

Students have also examined how texts can reflect the time and place in which they were written and identified the point of view from which a text is told. They have compared the effects of imagery, including similes and metaphors, and used a range of comprehension strategies to understand both the literal and inferred meanings in texts.

Writing

In Writing, we finalised our unit on historical recounts, with students applying their understanding of chronological order, paragraph structure, informative detail and appropriate language features to complete and publish their work.

We then moved into our poetry unit, exploring both limericks and cinquain poems. Students learned about the different structures and features of each poetry form and experimented with rhyme, rhythm, syllables and descriptive vocabulary.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have continued to develop their understanding of fractions and have practised rounding numbers using their knowledge of place value. They have also applied mathematical skills to real-world situations through our financial planning unit, exploring concepts such as costs, income, budgeting and profit.

Students have also investigated chance and probability, describing the likelihood of events and conducting simple experiments. More recently, we have been developing our understanding of perimeter and area and applying these skills to a range of practical problems.

Inquiry

Students created a portfolio to showcase and consolidate their learning throughout our Civics and Citizenship unit. Through a range of learning experiences, they developed their understanding of the roles and responsibilities of local, state and federal governments, the process of creating laws and passing a bill, the separation of powers, human rights, and the ways individuals can become active and informed citizens. Their completed portfolios provided an opportunity to reflect on and demonstrate their knowledge, highlighting their developing understanding of Australian democracy and civic participation.

Social Emotional Learning

During SEL sessions, students have explored a range of strategies to support their wellbeing and relationships. Our learning has included help-seeking, empathy, stress management and mindfulness, with students discussing practical ways they can use these skills in everyday situations.

Students have also explored gender norms and stereotypes and considered how stereotypes can influence people’s expectations, choices and opportunities. These sessions have encouraged thoughtful discussion about respecting differences and supporting others.
