Child Safety Update: Changes to the PROTECT Framework and Family Support Services
At our school, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority. The Victorian Department of Education has recently updated the PROTECT framework, which provides guidance for schools on responding to concerns about child safety and wellbeing.
These updates strengthen the way schools identify, respond to and report concerns, ensuring children and young people receive the support they need as early as possible.
As part of these changes, schools continue to work closely with a range of support services, including The Orange Door.
What is The Orange Door?
The Orange Door is a free Victorian Government service that supports children, young people and families. The service provides access to advice, information and coordinated support for a range of concerns, including:
Parenting and family wellbeing
Child and family support
Family conflict
Family violence
Assistance in connecting families with local services and supports
The Orange Door aims to provide early support, helping families access the right services before challenges become more significant.
What does this mean for families?
If school staff have concerns about a student's safety or wellbeing, we will continue to work with families wherever appropriate and, when required under Department policy, may consult with or make a referral to external support services such as The Orange Door.
A referral does not necessarily indicate that a child is at immediate risk. In many cases, it is a way of connecting families with practical supports that can improve wellbeing and strengthen positive outcomes for children.
Working together
We value our partnership with families and recognise that parents and carers know their children best. We encourage families to reach out if they are experiencing challenges or would like support. Our wellbeing team is available to discuss concerns, provide guidance and help connect families with appropriate services when needed.
By working together, we can ensure every child feels safe, supported and able to thrive both at school and at home.
