Year Five 

We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful holiday break! It has been fantastic to welcome our Year 5 students back for an exciting start to Term 3. The classrooms have been filled with enthusiasm, curiosity and a strong eagerness to learn. We are looking forward to another wonderful term of learning and growth together.

Reading

This term, students have begun reading our new class novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class. They have already started analysing the text by making thoughtful inferences, using clues from the author's words alongside their own background knowledge to develop a deeper understanding of the characters and events. These rich discussions have encouraged students to think critically and justify their thinking with evidence from the text.

Students are also continuing to work through their individual Book Club novels. During these sessions, they are developing their comprehension skills, engaging in meaningful discussions with their peers and responding to a range of activities that deepen their understanding of their chosen texts.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been exploring the exciting topic of Probability and Chance. They have been learning how to represent the probability of events by converting probabilities into fractions and decimals.

Students have also been developing their mathematical vocabulary by using key probability terms such as certain, likely, unlikely, impossible and equal chance to describe and compare the likelihood of different events. Through hands-on investigations and problem-solving activities, students are building confidence in explaining and justifying their mathematical thinking.

Writing

In Writing, students have been building on their knowledge of information texts. This week, the class worked through a shared information report on Homie, exploring the structure and language features that make information texts effective.

Students began by using Cornell note-taking to organise and record key information before applying the TEEL paragraph structure to plan and write clear, well-organised information paragraphs. We look forward to seeing students continue to develop their research, note-taking and informative writing skills throughout the term.

Inquiry

This term, we have begun our new Inquiry unit with the central idea: "Access to opportunities may affect equality for all."

Students have started exploring a range of issues that influence human rights and how these can impact people's access to equal opportunities. Throughout the week, they have investigated topics such as gender, race and religion, engaging in thoughtful discussions about fairness, inclusion and equity.

As the unit progresses, students will continue to examine real-world circumstances that can affect people's access to opportunities. Through inquiry, discussion and reflection, they will develop a deeper understanding of the importance of respecting diversity, promoting equality and taking action to create a more inclusive world.
