Year Four

Welcome back to Term 3! We have had a fantastic start to the semester, with students returning enthusiastic and ready to learn. Over the past two weeks, Year 4 students have participated in a range of engaging learning experiences both in the classroom and beyond.
Unit of Inquiry
To celebrate the conclusion of our Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves (Central Idea: Media can be a powerful tool that influences thinking), students visited ACMI in the Melbourne CBD. During the excursion, they explored The Story of the Moving Image, learning about the history and development of film, television and digital media. Students also enjoyed watching The Wild Robot after completing our class novel by Peter Brown, providing an exciting opportunity to compare the novel with its film adaptation and reflect on how different forms of media influence audiences.
Reading
In Reading, students completed a range of learning activities connected to The Wild Robot. They practised important comprehension skills such as making predictions before viewing the film and retelling key events from the story. We were also excited to officially launch our Term 3 Book Clubs, where students selected/assigned books, established group expectations and began their collaborative reading journeys.
Writing
This fortnight, students explored the importance of engaging leads in narrative writing. They investigated different ways authors capture a reader's attention and experimented with writing their own creative openings. Students also continued to develop and record writing ideas in their Writer's Notebooks, building a collection of ideas they can draw upon throughout the term.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students began our new unit on Data and Space. They developed their skills in interpreting, describing, analysing and representing data using a variety of tables, graphs, and displays. Students were encouraged to think critically about the information presented and explain the patterns and trends they observed.
Sovereign Hill Camp Group 1
Our Group 1 students enjoyed an unforgettable two-day, one-night camp at Sovereign Hill. Through a range of hands-on experiences, students explored what life was like during the Victorian gold rush, gaining valuable insights into how people lived, worked and learned in the past. The immersive activities provided a wonderful foundation for our upcoming Unit of Inquiry, Where We Are in Place and Time (Central Idea: Exploration reshapes civilisation and influences perspectives), which students will begin exploring this term.
Reminders
Please ensure your child brings their fully charged iPad to school every day.
Students are encouraged to bring a labelled water bottle each day.
Hats are not required during Term 3.
Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday 28 July (Week 3) from 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm. This is a valuable opportunity to discuss your child's learning progress, particularly as written report comments were not included last semester due to the industrial action. Please ensure you book an interview via XUNO. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact your child's classroom teacher.
We look forward to another exciting and successful term of learning with our Year 4 students!
From the Year 4 team.
