Year One

Reading

Over the past two weeks, our Year 1 students have been building their comprehension skills in exciting ways. In Week 1, students practised inferring, using picture clues together with their own thinking to work out what is happening in a story, even when the author doesn't tell us directly. In Week 2, students launched into our new Inquiry unit, beginning with a fun provocation activity where they shared family artefacts with the class. They then explored the Aboriginal story Tiddalick the Frog, learning to ask thoughtful questions, summarise a text using the SUM strategy (Shorter, Use your own words, Main points only), and make text-to-self connections by relating events in the story to their own lives. Students also practised partner reading to build fluency and expression.

Writing

Students have continued growing as confident writers over the fortnight. In Week 1, they wrote a holiday recount, using the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why) to help plan their writing, with a focus on using capital letters and full stops correctly. In Week 2, students moved into narrative writing, using The Three Little Pigs and Tiddalick the Frog as mentor texts. They explored story mountains to identify the beginning, middle and end of a narrative, experimented with "sizzling starts" to hook their reader, and retold an Indigenous story respectfully, identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution.

Phonics

Our phonics learning has focused on consonant blends over the past two weeks. In Week 1, students explored the sp and st blends, with words such as spoke, spat, sparkle and sprinkle, and star, stuck, stink and stingray. In Week 2, the focus shifted to the sk and nk blends, including words like skip, skunk, ask and thankfully. Students took part in sound boxes, dictation tasks and "sound search" games each day to strengthen their blending and decoding skills.

Maths

Our mathematicians have been busy building their number sense over the last fortnight. In Week 1, students explored addition and subtraction fact families, learning that addition and subtraction are connected and belong to the same "number family," and completed their Additive and Space common assessments. In Week 2, the focus moved to place value, with students using tens and ones and number lines to compare and locate numbers, as well as learning to recognise, name and describe 2D shapes.
