Year Six
Dear Year Six Families,
Welcome back to Term 3! During the first two weeks of the term, students have begun preparing for Exhibition while continuing to develop their reading, writing and mathematics skills. Students also participated in learning experiences recognising NAIDOC Week, which occurred during the school holidays.
Reading
In Reading, students explored character traits and the IB Learner Profile attributes. They used evidence from texts to infer characters’ qualities, motivations and behaviours.
Students then developed their questioning skills using the IB specified concepts of form, function, change, causation, connection, perspective and responsibility. They explored how questions can progress from surface-level thinking to deeper inquiry and used these questions to strengthen their understanding of different texts.
Writing
In Writing, students completed a pre-assessment information report and added ideas connected to the Learner Profile attribute Knowledgeable to their Writer’s Notebooks.
Students then planned, drafted and edited an information text using VCOP strategies, with a focus on vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation.
During Week 2, students explored what makes a complete sentence and investigated different sentence types. They practised constructing simple, compound and complex sentences and considered how writers can vary sentence structure to create an effect and maintain the reader’s interest.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students began a unit on fractions. They developed their understanding of fraction vocabulary and explored different ways fractions can be represented.
Students practised counting by halves, quarters and thirds before identifying equivalent fractions and converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. They also compared and ordered common unit fractions and represented fractions with related denominators on parallel number lines.
Visual tools, including fraction walls and number lines, supported students in explaining their mathematical thinking and recognising relationships between fractions.
Exhibition
Students have begun their Exhibition journey. They are starting to explore areas of personal interest, identify significant issues and develop meaningful questions to guide their independent inquiries.
Over the coming weeks, students will work collaboratively while strengthening their research, communication, self-management and critical-thinking skills. We look forward to supporting them throughout this exciting learning experience.
NAIDOC Week
Although NAIDOC Week occurred during the school holidays, students participated in learning experiences during the first week of Term 3 to celebrate the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
These activities encouraged students to deepen their understanding of and appreciation for the world’s oldest continuing cultures.
Girls’ Netball Division Finals
On Tuesday 21 July, our Girls’ Netball Team competed in the Division Finals against Queen of Peace, Altona College and Williamstown North Primary School.
The girls won two of their three games, narrowly losing to Altona College by only two goals. Throughout the day, they demonstrated resilience, encouragement and outstanding teamwork. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and achievements.
Thank you to Ms Grenfell for leading the team’s training and coaching them on the day. We also extend our thanks to the parents who attended and supported the team.
