La Minute Française

La Minute Française

Bonjour, I’m Molly, your French captain for 2024. Read below for some interesting info on French activities, music, art and sport.

Bastille Day (le 14 juillet) French Festival

Bastille Day French Festival will return to the Queen Victoria Market on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July this year. This is a family-friendly event where the market will be packed with local French-Australian businesses, mouth-watering French cuisine, dazzling artists and performers, a cultural program filled with Les Lumières talks, Walking Tours and masterclasses, right in the heart of the city!

French songs

At the beginning of class we usually listen to French songs before we start. It's a good way to boost your French vocabulary and pronunciation. A good French song could be: Christine and the Queens - Christine There is an English version but it isn’t translated from the French: Christine and the Queens Tilted

French Exhibition

In Bendigo at the moment there is a Paris exhibition running from the 16th of March until the 14th of July 2024. It shows what Paris was like between 1880 and 1925.

Sport

In only a few weeks is the Olympics (Les Jeux Olympiques) and as you probably know it’s in France (mostly in Paris).

  • Summer Olympics: Fri, 26 July 2024 – Sun, 11 Aug 2024
  • Summer Paralympic Games: 28 August to 8 September 2024

Stadiums are popping up all through the French capital to accommodate all the sports !

Here’s the official image for this year’s Olympics:

Le football

That isn’t the only big sporting event happening this year. In July 2023 the French Cup started (football / soccer). A few weeks ago it was down to two teams: PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) and Lyon. The final score was 2-1 with PSG walking away with their 15th French Cup trophy.

Fixtures and Results | Paris Saint-Germain. In French Grade 6 students have been doing some work on Paris Saint Germain inspired by a group of football-mad students ! 😉

Also this term there is the European Cup with France playing their first game against Austria on the 18th of June.

Le Tour de France

The Tour de France bike race is starting in Florence, Italy on 29th June and finishing in Nice, France one the 21st July.

This will be the first time (due to the Olympics) the race has not finished at the Arc de Triomphe, along the famous Champs-Elysées.
