Resource Smart Schools Progress Workshop

On Monday 9th of September, the MGC Sustainability Team hosted Sustainability Victoria’s Resource Smart Schools Workshop.

Staff from ten different schools attended the school to share and learn from each other and to document their progress in the resource Smart School Program.

MGC was invited to host the event and our wonderful Canteen provided a rubbish free lunch and our amazing students provided a school tour to showcase our journey towards Zero waste and carbon neutrality.

All adults who attended were asked to pedal back some of the electricity they consumed as part of the event and were provided with some bush tucker medicine from our revegetation project on the Birrarung. There was an extended conversation about how to manage organic waste on schools and we proudly showed off the many well-used solar cones around the school, including the famous solar cone Steve who was officially opened by Ms Warriner in Term 2 this year.

Thanks to Immy Martin, Chloe McCormick, Piper Day, Mara Mircan and Frankie Hackwood for running the sustainability tour!

Birrarung Riverfest

The Birrarung Festival run by the Yarra River Keepers Association is currently in full swing. On Sunday 8th September, MGC alumni and 2023 Environment co-captain Sophie Hart was invited to perform a “Letter to the Birrarung” to an audience of river enthusiasts while floating on the Birrarung!

Sophie did a stellar job, matching the wonderful performances of accomplished authors and artists Zena Cumpston and Harry Sadler.

Climate Emergency Plan Launch

On Thursday the 22nd of August the City of Yarra Officially Launched their Climate Emergency Plan.

The plan was a major piece of work that involved years of planning and community consultation to address the climate emergency, especially withing the local government area of Yarra. The MGC student environment team were involved in the youth consultation and 2024 Environment co-captains Piper Day and Chloe McCormick were invited to attend the launch. Chloe was chosen to be part of a panel discussion to share her views on the plan and her commitment to Climate Change education and mitigation. We are very proud of your work Chloe!

Congratulations to Chloe and all the students who worked on the plan!

Electrify your Life Festival

On Sunday the 8th of September, community action group Electrify Boroondara hosted its second annual Electrify your life festival at Hawthorn Town Hall. MGC was invited to attend and demonstrate our electricity generators with an electric ergo and pedal generators. Our Environment captains Piper Day, Chloe McCormick and Mara Mircan attended and ran human electricity challenges all day to a group of interested onlookers from all ages. People were challenged to race against each other or an Olympic cycling champion to see if they could muster the energy to cook a slice of toast!

We are very proud to be a part of such an innovative and progressive community working towards a more sustainable society. Well done captains!
