Principal's Report

As Term 3 comes to a close, I am proud of how our students have embodied the values of excellence, diversity, and teamwork. From academic achievements to extracurricular successes, our young people are not just reaching their personal best but are also uplifting each other, embracing our rich diversity, and demonstrating the power of collaboration.

At Melbourne Girls' College, we remain dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our entire college community. Over the last two years, we have invested in Youth Mental Health First Aid Training for our entire community.  This is to ensure that our students, staff, and parents and carers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to support young people in times of need.

Our second group of parents and carers in 2024 completed their two-day training session last weekend. This training empowers them with the tools to recognise signs of mental health challenges, offer initial help, and guide young people towards professional support when necessary. We are incredibly proud of the commitment shown by our parent and carer community in prioritising the mental wellbeing of our students.

On Saturday morning, twenty students from across Year 9 to 11 Year, along with four staff members, will embark upon a two-week language tour to France. This tour offers our students a unique chance to immerse themselves in the French culture, enhance their language skills, and embrace the many experiences that come with such a special journey. We wish them a fantastic and enriching adventure!

I would like to commend our senior students, especially our Year 12s, as they approach their final weeks of classes and exams in Term 4. Year 12 often feels like both a marathon and a sprint, and I understand the pressure everyone is under. During the term break, students will participate in trial exams and attend revision lectures in key subjects. I encourage families of Year 12 students to have discussions at home about preparing for this crucial period. It’s important to build momentum with a clear routine for revision, while also allowing time to rest and recharge.

On Friday 30th of August, MGC along with many other schools and workplaces across the country, recognised Wear it Purple Day. This is a national event organised by “Wear it Purple”, a student-run, not-for-profit organisation. It was wonderful to see so many of our staff and students delve into their wardrobes to find purple clothes to proudly support the initiative.

This week, our Year 9 students have been immersing themselves in the vibrant heart of Melbourne as part of the City Experience curriculum program. Throughout the week, students have taken the opportunity to develop their independence, life skills, and sense of responsibility while navigating the city's diverse landscape. The program has encouraged them to work collaboratively, strengthening their teamwork and interpersonal skills. By engaging with the rich learning resources and unique opportunities available in Melbourne, our students have gained invaluable insights that extend far beyond the classroom, preparing them for future challenges with confidence and resilience.

We would like to remind parents and carers of the upcoming Parent Student Teacher Conferences on Tuesday 17th of September. This is a valuable opportunity for you to meet with our teachers to discuss your child’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth. While students are not required to attend school on this day, they are strongly encouraged to participate in the conferences alongside their parents and carers to take an active role in their learning journey. Your involvement is key to supporting our students' success, and we look forward to these important conversations.

Thank you for your support this term.
