News from the Library

It is hard to believe we are already at the end of Term 1! We wish everyone a great break and hope you get time to catch up with some great storytelling, whether it be a book, audiobook, or podcast. Remember, while the physical Library space is closed over the holidays, you can always access eBooks and audiobooks via the Library catalogue online. Access is via Compass - School Favourites (Star) dropdown list.
Shadow Judging
The CBCA (Children's Book Council of Australia) have invited students across Australia to join the conversation about the annual Book of the Year shortlist and to choose their preferred winners. Shadow Judges read all six shortlisted books in their chosen category, then judge them using the same criteria that the official CBCA book judges use. It is a lot of fun, reading and discussing each book and deciding which title you think should win. Students who would like the opportunity to be part of the Wantirna College Shadow Judging community should please email us.

PAINTINGS WITH LEGS | Winter Woodrow
They hang us early.
Before we know the weight of nails,
Before we learn the language of stillness.
We are framed.
Gold leaf expectations.
Carefully measured borders.
A plaque beneath the ribs
Spelling our names correctly
So no one has to ask who we are.
We are told this is honour.
Stand straight.
Tilt your chin toward good lighting.
Keep your colours inside approved seasons.
They study us like landscapes,
Searching for a flaw in the horizon,
Storm in the background,
Too much red in the mouth.
Some of us are restored
Again and again
Until the original brush strokes
Can not be found.
Some of us are praised
For how well we fade.
But canvas remembers.
It tightens in humidity.
It warps in heat.
It hums when no one is watching.
And sometimes, quietly,
The frame begins to split.
Not loudly.
Not rebelliously.
Just enough
For a knee to press through the varnish,
For a heel to test the gallery floor,
For a breath to reach beyond the border.
We were never meant to move.
Yet dust lifts when we step.
And somewhere behind us,
An empty hook swings.
