It is often said that Australia’s 12th Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, once declared, “No education in Australia is complete until a child knows how to flip a pancake…”
This week, our budding Year 7 chefs proudly brought that vision to life in the kitchen.

As part of their practical learning, students explored the foundations of cooking by preparing the humble pancake—an essential recipe that builds confidence and independence in the kitchen. While cooking, students demonstrated their understanding of dry frying techniques, stove safety, accurate measuring, and began exploring the role of functional ingredients—understanding how each component contributes to texture, structure, and flavour.
The room was filled with excitement (and the smell of freshly cooked pancakes!) as students practised the all-important flip, with many celebrating their first successful attempt.

Each student did a fantastic job and, of course, was rewarded with a delicious treat at the end of the lesson. Some sources even reported a secret serving of Ice Cream was supplied at the end of the practical session.
We encourage all members of the Wantirna College community to try this recipe at home. Students are invited to experiment with flavours and report back on their favourite combinations.

Some popular choices from 7E households included:
Maple syrup and fresh strawberries
Lemon and sugar
Nutella
Maple syrup and crispy bacon
We look forward to hearing about even more creative combinations!
