Wednesday 12th of November saw our three teams of mostly Year 7 students from the robotics club compete in the First LEGO League at Swinburne University’s KIOSC in Wantirna South. Each team had been working in earnest since July in preparing their innovative project and for the robot game. They were scored on the day on four equal components: presentation of their project; development of their robot design; how many missions their robots completed in the robot game; and their demonstration of the core values of discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun.
The theme for this year was archaeology, and each team’s innovated project was the development of a theoretical device that would aid archaeologists in the field. Students had conducted their own research into the common issues, including interviewing university professors from around Australia. In the robot game the ‘No Fears, Just Gears’ team finished the day in 3rd place after a slow start but improving on each of their three attempts.
While none of our teams won an individual award on the day, we were thrilled when we learned that the ‘Unbreakable 3310’ had progressed to the next round. But that paled in comparison to our ‘Chickens Rehatched’ team being crowned champions on the day. These two teams will now compete against 38 other teams on December 6th at the Nationals South round.
When you next visit the school, please admire the champions trophy on display in the foyer.
