Year 9 News

Vermont Secondary College

Hello lovely families and guardians of our yr 9 students

As we come to the end of another year, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support. Year 9 is a significant stage in our student’s journey, and your encouragement, communication and support have played a huge part in helping them succeed.

This year our year 9s have shown fantastic progress both academically and personally and we have been thrilled to see so many students taking part in school sports, swimming carnivals, clubs, the production, music concerts to name a few. The DTO camps have occurred recently and of course next week we celebrate the end of year 9 and the entry to senior school with our camp at Philip Island.

As they prepare to step into year 10 next week during Transition, we are all excited to be continuing as Year 10 Student Managers and cannot wait to see how they will mature and build on the strong foundation they have created this year.

Some house keeping reminders:

· Students need to have cleaned and removed all supplies from their current locker

· Transition begins for 1 week on Monday 1st Dec

·   Camp runs from 8th - 10th Dec

· The Summer Program - runs at school following camp from Mon 15th until the end of the year

We wish you and your family a restful , safe and happy holiday break and we look forward to seeing everyone at Transition and on camp next week.

Warmest regards,

The Year 9 Student Manager Team 2025

(Leanne Callegaro, Natalie Anderson Sally Nettleship and Michael Malpeli)

On Friday the 21st of November, the year 9 students finished off their junior science journeys with Wonderlab. The year 9s were split into two different groups; half of the classes were in period 3, and half were in period 4. During these periods students were taken to the auditorium to listen to groups of students present a TED talk about their WonderLab experiments.

What is Wonderlab? In the first 5 weeks of term 4, all Year 9 students were able to get into small groups of 2-3 and spent one lesson a week, brainstorming, planning and organising equipment for their own scientific research. Weeks 6 and 7 were spent conducting their experiments and then producing a poster to present their results.

Each class had one group chosen to present a TED talk in front of their peers. Scientists from the community were also invited to view the TED talks. They provided some interesting and valuable feedback that really made us think about our projects and reflect upon what we could’ve done if we had had all the fancy lab instruments that they had! It was really insightful to hear not only their very specific questions, but also their thoughts about formatting, presentation, and how we could’ve run our year 9 school experiments in a much more scientifically accurate way. We certainly learnt a lot and cannot wait for them to come back to ridicule and judge next year’s Wonderlab!

Additionally, all the other groups had made posters to show the findings of their experiment. All the year 9s later had the chance to view these posters in the E wing and vote on their favourite. There was certainly a huge variety of experiments, and also in the amount of effort put into the posters! It was really intriguing to walk around and see the different results. Some experiments include growing bacteria using samples from teachers’ desks, capturing ants and seeing their favourite habitats, crystal growing, some physics behind archery, and Skittles colours vs flavours. It was great to see the year 9 students’ creativity and effort!

Thank you to the teachers involved for supporting the groups, praying their students would find where the presentations were, and leaving early to ensure our gracious scientists were fed with our VSC gourmet canteen food. It was a great day and we appreciate you all for believing in us to come through with some great projects!

A great way to end junior school science.
