Junior Competition

On Wed 12th November we had Round 2 of the Junior Debating Competition for Ringwood. It was a very successful evening!!!

Both of our teams were debating on the topic ‘That 50% of school assessments should be non-written and non-typed assessment’ (e.g. videos, sports). Team 1 (Sahana P, Inaaya K, Elly T and Cloris L) was on the negative side, and their team won the debate, with Elly being awarded the best speaker of the two sides.

Team 2 (Nirvani A, Sam L, Samaaya S) was on the affirmative side. Their result was only 1 point behind the opposing team, and Sam was awarded the best speaker of the two sides.

Well done to all of our new Year 7 debaters so far – we look forward to building on your skills in the years to come as you move into the Senior Debating Competition.

Invitation to try out for the National Schools Debating Championships

The Victorian Schools Team (VST) is soon holding trials for the Victorian Debating Team in the Australian Schools Debating Championships, which will be held in Brisbane in late April/early May. All our 2025 debaters, or anyone hoping to join debating next year, are invited to try out for the competition.

We want to make a special shoutout to Jovia J and Kaveri A (Year 9s) who were formally recognised and invited to try out for the competition.

On the day, students will compete in two secret topic debates in randomly allocated teams. The trials are a fantastic experience, as they will allow students to get some practice before the Schools Competition — and to learn from some of the best adjudicators and debaters in Victoria. 

The first round of trials will be held as follows:

DATE: Sunday 7 December at Melbourne Grammar School

TIME: Students will be allocated to a group and required to attend from either 9:00am-3:00pm or 10:00am-4:30pm

COST: $15 per student (Applications to waive this fee can be made via the sign-up form)
