Languages Beyond the Classroom: Alumni Stories

In May, language students heard from recent alumni about how learning a second language at Frankston High School has broadened their career opportunities and given them a competitive edge.

Charlotte Redey, who studied French, spoke to Years 10 to 12 students who are studying French. After a gap year travelling through Europe, she shared how using French inspired her to learn more languages and build global connections. She encouraged students with the advice:

“Don’t run away from the hard stuff, chase it.”

Year 11 French students heard from Zara Black, who used her French to work as an au pair in Paris before travelling Europe. She explained how language skills helped her connect with the culture and will support her future career.

Shion Northey, who studied Japanese, spoke to Year 10 students about his exchange to Japan, where he gained cultural insight and lifelong friendships. After school, he studied International Business and Marketing at RMIT, worked with travel startup Designer Journeys. While working and studying he completed an internship with Austrade in Tokyo, strengthening his Japanese skills and business knowledge, which he used to help grow the company’s Japan market.

His journey highlights how studying a language can lead to real world career opportunities.

ABOUT THE ALUMNI PROGRAM

Frankston High School is continuing to grow its alumni program in partnership with Ourschool, a not-for-profit alumni program for state secondary schools and the first of its kind in Australia.

By connecting with the alumni program, past students can provide career guidance and work experience opportunities for current students, establish scholarships and bequests, or volunteer in lots of other ways.

Ourschool is working with Frankston High to help these things happen by growing the school’s alumni community and coordinating the involvement of alumni in the school.
