MIDDLE SCHOOL | Update

Dear Parents/Carers, Students And Friends
We are now halfway through Term 2, with students finalising Semester 1 Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) and beginning preparations for the Semester 1 Examination period. The term has been filled with incredible learning opportunities that continue to highlight our pillars of Excellence, Community and Aspirations.
Students have engaged in a wide range of extracurricular and experiential learning opportunities, including our fantastic whole-school House Athletics Carnival celebrating house spirit and participation, the Aviation class visiting Tyabb Airfield for flight experiences, Outdoor and Environmental Studies expeditions along the Murray River, Year 9 Humanities excursions to Monash University and the Melbourne CBD, and the Year 10 Food with Flair class visiting Dandenong Market to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences.
It was also wonderful to welcome parents and carers back onsite for our Parent Student Teacher Conferences on Tuesday 28 April. These evenings are an important opportunity to strengthen the partnership between home and school, celebrate student growth, and discuss strategies to further support student learning and wellbeing. We greatly value the strong attendance and engagement from families and thank our staff, students and parents for contributing to such a positive and productive evening.
Year 10
Our Year 10 students have now completed their Teen Mental Health First Aid training, with all students successfully achieving their certificate, which can be included on resumes and future applications. Through this program, students developed important knowledge and skills relating to mental health and learnt strategies to better support both their own wellbeing and that of their peers. This learning continues to be an important protective factor in strengthening the wellbeing of our young people.
Students have also been completing Occupational Health and Safety Certificates relevant to the industries they will be working in during the Week 10 Work Experience Program. From Monday 22 June to Friday 26 June, all Year 10 students will be offsite participating in career exploration through work experience placements. We wish all students the very best for this valuable opportunity and encourage them to challenge themselves, engage meaningfully in their chosen industry, and ask plenty of questions.
We look forward to hearing about their experiences during Term 3 Optima classes.
During Week 5 Optima classes, our Year 10 student leaders organised and led a range of Optima Connectedness activities. Students participated in events including trivia, sport, karaoke, art, and mindfulness activities. Thank you to our Year 10 student leaders Alannah Ireland, Gemma Gilchrist and Holly Godfrey for their organisation and leadership of this fantastic initiative.
Next week, Year 10 students will complete the annual Attitudes to School Survey during Optima classes. This survey is conducted across all Victorian Government schools and provides students with an important opportunity to share their perspectives about their experience at Frankston High School. All responses are confidential. Student feedback is carefully reviewed each year and contributes to ongoing school improvement across learning, engagement, wellbeing, and school culture. Students are encouraged to reflect on their overall school experience when completing the survey.
Year 9
We have been incredibly impressed by the maturity and engagement demonstrated by our Year 9 students throughout the Morrisby Profiling process and their interviews with career consultants. Over 300 Year 9 students have now completed their interviews and have hopefully shared some of the exciting discussions with their families. Students will be able to use this information to consider future pathways, part-time employment opportunities, industries they may wish to explore during Year 10 Work Experience in 2027, and to support their Year 10 subject selections later this year.
In Optima classes, students have also learnt about the acceleration process for Year 9 students interested in studying a VCE subject in Year 10. Further information for families will be provided through online Careers Information videos and the Subject Selection Website, which will be released later this term. We encourage students to consider the opportunity to challenge themselves through accelerated learning and experience a VCE subject while in Year 10.

In Week 10, the Year 9 Upskills Program will run from Wednesday 24 June to Friday 26 June. The purpose of the program is to provide students with meaningful opportunities to develop practical skills, explore future pathways, and strengthen their confidence and independence. It also aims to build year-level connectedness through shared experiences, while reinforcing the role of Optima as an important support and connection point for students. Throughout the program, students will participate in a range of activities, including:
- Hearing from recent alumni about their pathways and post-school experiences
- Panel discussions with current Year 12 students
- Resume writing workshops
- Sessions facilitated by alumni and staff
- A city experience excursion
- Dedicated Optima reflection and connection sessions
- Speak & Share Workshop
- Courage to Care presentation
Years 9 and 10 Midyear Examinations
The Years 9 and 10 Midyear Examinations will take place during Week 9 of Term 2, commencing on Monday 15 June and concluding on Thursday 18 June. These examinations provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their Semester 1 learning while continuing to develop the study habits, preparation strategies, and examination skills required for success in the senior years.
Students will complete examinations in English/EAL, Mathematics, and Science, with one examination scheduled each day. Students are only required at school for their scheduled examination, with no regular classes running on examination days. Wednesday 17 June will remain a normal school day for students not involved in Intermediate Sport.
Families are encouraged to support students in preparing for the examination period by helping them establish organised study routines, maintain healthy balance, and ensure they arrive prepared with the correct equipment and full school uniform.
Students are reminded that examination conditions apply from the time they enter the examination room. Mobile phones and smart watches are not permitted in examination rooms and must be secured in lockers prior to the exam. Compass photo identification is also required for all examinations.
Students with approved Special Examination Arrangements (SEAs) will receive separate communication outlining their adjusted provisions and room allocations.
Further information regarding examination timetables, room allocations, calculator requirements, missed examinations, and study support resources has been provided to families via Compass.
We wish all students the very best for their Semester 1 examinations and encourage them to approach the period with confidence, preparation, and balance.
As we move into the second half of the term, thank you to our students, staff and families for continuing to demonstrate the values of Respect, Responsibility, Empathy and Resilience throughout all aspects of school life. These values continue to underpin the strong culture of learning, connectedness and support that we are proud to see across our Middle School community.
