GEOGRAPHY | Out and About

May has been a busy month for Geography at Frankston High School, with students from Years 9, 11, and 12 all heading out into the field to apply their classroom learning in real-world contexts. A huge thank you to all staff who gave their time and expertise to make these excursions possible.

Year 11 VCE Geography | Marysville Fieldtrip

On Tuesday 12 May, 15 Year 11 Geography students travelled to Marysville to investigate natural disasters and community responses as part of their Unit 1 studies. Highlights included a hike up to Stevensons Falls lookout, a visit to the Bushfire Museum, and time exploring the town itself - assessing how Marysville has rebuilt and responded in the years since the devastating 2009 Black Saturday fires. Students practised key fieldwork skills including field sketches and site assessments. Thank you to Ms Hodgson for organising the event and leadership on the day.

Year 12 VCE Geography | Montague Precinct Fieldtrip

On Wednesday 13 May, 17 Year 12 Geography students visited the Montague Precinct in Fishermans Bend to investigate land use change and urban renewal as part of their Unit 3 studies.

The excursion gave students the opportunity to examine whether the precinct's ongoing transformation is enhancing the liveability and sustainability of the area. Standout moments included a visit to South Melbourne Market - a first for most students - and seeing South Melbourne Primary School, Melbourne's first vertical primary school. Students also observed heritage buildings being adapted and repurposed for mixed residential and commercial use.

Thank you again to Ms Hodgson for her support on the day.

Year 9 Humanities | CBD Interconnections Fieldtrip

In our biggest excursion of the term, approximately 170 Year 9 students descended on Melbourne's CBD to investigate how the city's transport networks and public spaces enhance or hinder interconnection on Monday 18 May. Students conducted traffic and pedestrian counts around Flinders Street and Swanston Street, and assessed Melbourne's famous laneways for accessibility, tourist appeal, and heritage value. A visit to the new Town Hall Station and - perhaps most memorably - free chocolate samples from Haigh's in the Block Arcade were clear highlights.

A massive thank you to the staff who made this excursion run smoothly: Mr Fuller, Mrs Evans, Mr Trickovic, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Johnson, Ms Richards, Mr Booth, and Ms Provost.

Year 8 Geography | Melbourne Zoo

During the last week of Term 1, our Year 8 students attended the Geography fieldwork excursion to Melbourne Zoo to research rainforest environments and why they are important for humans and animals. Students were lucky enough to see the new snow leopard cubs along with the usual suspects - butterflies, monkeys, gorillas and the cheeky lemurs.
