Peer Support Leaders 

Appointment of Peer Support Leaders for 2024 

The Peer Support Program is designed to provide support and facilitate connection between groups of Year 7 students and Year 10 leaders who have been carefully selected through a rigorous application process and trained for their position. The leaders deliver a wellbeing program aimed at educating Year 7 students on the value of peer-to-peer support and pro-social skills. It has been shown that pro-social skills and behaviours are more effective when the delivery is authentic and apt to the real experience of students in school. Asking student role-models to deliver the program, then, ensures this authenticity but, crucially, also establishes and builds relationships within the school community. One of the key tenants of creating a supportive school environment is establishing and nurturing a culture in which students feel known and connected within the community. Thus, the Program taps into the most valuable source of support within the school community – its students. 

The Program aims to offer meaningful leadership experiences to pre-senior students in the school community which provide genuine opportunity for self-development. The program provides the Year 7 students with a supportive environment in which they develop relationship awareness and management skills, individuality and connection across the community. The empowerment of young people in this way encourages them to grow in confidence and responsibility. 

Peer Support Leaders also play a crucial role in the Integr8 Transition Program, supporting the successful and smooth integration of Year 7 students into the Senior School at Shelford.  

A Peer Support Leader is an organised, approachable, compassionate, and well-regarded individual who enjoys working with younger students and, as such, they are role models and mentors for all students in the school community.
