Year 6
Welcome to our Grade 6 Classroom Communication for Term 3, Week 7!

Year 6 News by Queenie and Jasper
English
This term the Year 6’s have been learning a lot about Poland and we have been reading a book called Once by Morris Gleitzman. Once is about a young boy named Felix, who lived in Poland in the 1940’s when the Nazis took over. At the start of the book, he was in an orphanage, and his parents were somewhere in Europe, when the Nazis start to take over. He left the orphanage and he finds some other survivors. Even though they already had a lot of kids with them they still took him in and helped him.
Did you know?
Did you know Poland is in the centre of Europe which leads to some people calling it the heart of Europe. Poland is bordered by 7 other countries. The capital city of Poland is Warsaw. Pope John Paul II was from Poland!
When we study English, we usually do note taking to learn more for our information reports about Poland.
Now we are reading a new book called Can You See Me by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott. The book is about a girl being different to everyone else, going into high school and finding it challenging without her friends being as close to her as she’s used to and not getting away with as much as she did in primary school.
Maths
This term in maths we have learnt so much!
We have investigated fractions and have been adding and subtracting fractions, finding equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. We are all experts now!
We have also looked at angles and investigated complementary, supplementary angles, angles at a point and how to calculate unknown angles. We learnt about decimals and how to multiply and divide decimals by powers of ten.
We are currently learning about measurements, covering between units of measurement in length mass and capacity. Next topic we well be learning about is location and transformation.
Science
In Science we have been learning about renewable materials like paper and plastic and how it helps when we recycle them. We can make new and different things instead of just wasting it and adding to landfill.
Religious Education
This term in Religion, we have just finished the topic 'In God's Image', where we have been learning about who we are and where we belong. We explored how each person is created and loved by God and how our gifts, strengths, relationships and experiences help shape our identity. Through Scripture, music, discussions and creative activities, we reflected on what it means to be part of our Church community. We also learned how Gospel values can help us make respectful and responsible choices, and how we can show kindness, justice and care for others as followers of Jesus.
The topic we have just started this week is 'Living Our Mission'.
In this unit we will understand what mission means and the call to mission through Scripture, story and the study of people's lives. We will be invited to develop and implement ways to continue the mission of Jesus in the school and community.
This term we have celebrated many masses at our church which included Feast of the Assumption, St Mary of the Cross and a family mass.
We also have an upcoming family mass this weekend at 6:00 pm everybody is welcome.
Inquiry
We have been learning about Australia’s global connections with our neighbouring countries like New Zealand. Similarities between the two countries include sporting rivalry and food, and accents. They say pavlova was made in New Zealand but Australians disagree! They say the meat pies are theirs, but we disagree. In sport they call us cheats because we rolled the ball to win a cricket game many years ago. They clearly haven’t forgotten! We have a friendly rivalry with New Zealand.
Kinder Visits
We have been able to visit the local Kindergartens to meet some younger children and read some stories to them and have a little play with them. The children love having someone different to talk to and our students enjoy the outings very much as well.
Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR)
In RRRR we have been learning about Help Seeking and how to and who to seek help from within the community. We are creating a book about a roller coaster day which has ups and downs over every person’s day. The book will have a person that has a roller coaster day which shows the mixed emotions we all experience. We hope to be able to share it with another class when completed.
100 Days of Foundation
This term we celebrated our buddy’s first 100 days of school. The foundation students came dressed as old people which was pretty cool. Together with our buddies we made hats and also built towers using toothpicks and skewers, Blue Tac and play dough. We then sat down and had some tasty hot chips, and we all had a great day together.
Book Week
For Book Week this year we had an incursion about book week that told us about the Symphony of Stories and about the awarding winning books by using a performance. The highlight of the week is no doubt the dress-up parade where everyone showed their amazing costumes around the Mercy Centre. Then any parents or special friends were able to come back to the classrooms and participate in some activities together. Everyone had a fun day!
Also, during Book Week each class has the opportunity to visit the town library where we go and listen to some short-listed books and have a chance to have a look around and explore the library.
Once I Was a Giant was the book that we read and then were able to complete some activities on the day of the dress up parade.
GraniteHill Visit
We were pleased to be able to return to GraniteHill and visit the residents after a few years away following Covid. As it was our Book Week dress up day we added a bit of colour and flair to GraniteHill and the residents were filled with joy and happiness to meet and interact with our wonderful students. Hopefully we will return soon with a different crew of children.
FIRE Carrier Special Lunch
A few weeks ago, the FIRE Carriers will celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day with a special fundraising lunch of hotdogs and cupcakes, with all proceeds supporting the Opening the Doors Foundation.
Specialist Timetable
PE and Art are on a Tuesday this term, and Japanese and STEM are on a Wednesday.
A Quick Word from Mr. Tunks
Welcome to Week 7 of term 3! It has been great to get back into the swing of things after my parental leave, a big thank you to Mrs. Kerlin and other teachers helping out in my absence! I have Wednesdays off for the remainder of Term 3, and I will have week 1 of Term 4 off as a part of the remainder of my parental leave. Little Harry Tunks is going very well as is my wife Bella, and it was a great highlight last week when the class got to meet Harry at the library!
Just some reminders of our expectations in Year 6:
- Students to have their own drink bottles and hats at school
- Students to read and have their reader signed nightly and checked by the teacher before school each morning.
- Students to practice their spelling words nightly and checked by the teacher before school each morning.
