Book Week - My Nonno Loves... 

The Year 5 students have been enjoying reading My Nonno Loves... by Adele Frittitti, a beautiful story that celebrates the special relationship between a grandchild and their Nonno. After reading the story, we began thinking about the grandparents and special people in our own lives. We talked about the things that make these people special to us, the things they love, the memories we share with them and the little things that make our relationships unique.

Inspired by My Nonno Loves..., the students are now creating their own picture story books about a grandparent or another special person in their lives. They are using descriptive language, personal memories and illustrations to tell their stories and show just how much these people mean to them.

It has been wonderful to see the care and thought the students are putting into their writing. Each story is different and personal, reflecting the special connections they have with the important people in their lives.

This has been a lovely opportunity for the students to celebrate family, love, memories and the people who care for and support them. We are looking forward to seeing their finished books and sharing these very special stories! We also look forward to sharing these with you and the residents at Granite Hill in the future. 

Times Tables Blitz

Keep practising times tables at home we can certainly see the improvement and students becoming more automatic. The students are very invested in Times Tables King and Queen game and the competition drives some students to do better!

Literacy

We really enjoyed our first book this term - Tom Appleby Convict Boy. We were able to learn a lot about the First Fleet and how they lived and why convicts, like Tom, were sent to Australia. The living conditions and the challenges of the European people and the effects of the Eora people were highlighted. We enjoyed learning about Tom's life. 

We are now reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World. The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor is a fun and magical adventure set in the famous Cole’s Book Arcade in Melbourne. The story follows two siblings, Pearl and Vally, who work in the enormous bookshop and discover that it holds some very mysterious secrets. They become caught up in a magical competition involving books, puzzles and strange creatures, while trying to save the bookshop from danger.

It is an exciting story filled with magic, adventure, mystery and books, and it also explores themes of family, courage, friendship and the power of imagination. The students really enjoyed discovering the secrets of the bookshop and following Pearl and Vally on their adventure. We write a narrative at the end of the unit and the students learn a lot about different writing techniques to make their story interesting. 

Mathematics 

We have been working through the Ochre Maths program and building our confidence across a range of mathematical skills. This term, we have explored fractions, decimals, measurement and angles. Phew! It was a lot! 

The students have enjoyed tackling challenging problems, working with hands-on activities and sharing their thinking with others. We have focused on developing mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, rather than simply finding an answer.

It has been fantastic to see the students becoming more confident mathematicians. They have been encouraged to have a go, learn from mistakes and keep trying when a problem feels tricky. There have been plenty of “Aha!” moments along the way!

We are very proud of the effort and persistence the Year 5 students have shown throughout Term 3. 

RE

This term, the Year 5 students have been exploring what it means to be called to mission and how we can continue the mission of Jesus through our own words and actions.

Through Scripture, stories and the lives of inspiring people, we have discovered that mission is not just something that happens far away – it can begin right here in our school, our families and our local community. We have looked at people who have followed Jesus’ example by showing kindness, standing up for others, helping those in need and making a positive difference in the world.

The students are encouraged to think about an important question: “How can I make a difference?” They reflect on the gifts and strengths they have and consider practical ways they can put their faith into action.

As part of this learning, the students will develop and put into practice their own ideas for continuing Jesus’ mission within our school and community. It has been wonderful to see them recognise that even small acts of kindness, compassion, service and courage can make a big difference to others.
