SENIOR SCHOOL | Update

Dear Years 11 and 12 Parents/Carers and Students

As we move towards the end of Term 3, momentum is building across the Senior Campus. For our Year 12 students in particular, this is such a critical time of year. With most classes now finalising coursework and SACs, the focus is shifting towards the exam period and how students are preparing themselves for what lies ahead. 

This presents a fantastic opportunity. The students who are able to use their time purposefully over the coming weeks can make significant gains. We have been working closely with our Year 12 cohort to reinforce this message, focusing on effective study habits such as retrieval practice, completing practice SACs and exams, and, importantly, seeking feedback from teachers to identify and address gaps in knowledge and skills. 

Earlier this term, we challenged our Year 12 students to really get the best out of themselves. To take pride in their process, to use their time with purpose and to measure success through their effort and growth, not just outcomes. It has been really pleasing to see how they have responded. Feedback from staff and our own observations show a clear lift in focus and application, and we are incredibly proud of the way many students have embraced that challenge. 

The upcoming September practice exams will be another important step in this process. These exams provide students with a valuable opportunity to experience exam conditions, work with external supervisors and receive meaningful feedback on where they are at. I encourage both students and families to ensure they are familiar with the exam schedule and seating arrangements on Compass, so that students feel prepared and confident heading into this. 

We are also supporting our students who are completing an unscored pathway, many of whom are now finalising their coursework and working closely with their teachers to ensure they meet the requirements of their programs. It is always exciting to see students beginning to transition towards their post-school pathways, and we look forward to celebrating these journeys as we move towards Celebration Day and Valedictory. 

Across the Senior School, we have also seen some outstanding examples of students living our values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Empathy through their involvement in community initiatives. Our VCE/VM students have led events such as the March for Mental Fitness and Pancare, raising both awareness and funds for important causes. These experiences highlight what our pillars of Excellence, Aspiration and Community look like in action with students taking initiative, working together and making a positive contribution beyond themselves. As a Campus Principal, I have been so unbelievably proud of the work these students have led.

There have also been a number of important learning opportunities for our students, including the recent Consent Labs sessions for Year 11 and 12. These sessions play a vital role in supporting students to develop an understanding of respectful relationships and making informed, safe decisions. 

Our recent Parent Teacher Student Conferences provided another valuable opportunity for families to connect with teachers and gain insight into student progress. We hope these conversations were helpful in identifying both strengths and areas for growth, and we encourage families to continue these conversations at home. 

At the time of publication, our Year 11 students will be on their Central Australia trip. This is always a highlight of the Frankston High School experience, providing students with a unique opportunity to connect with each other and to connect with culture and community. We look forward to welcoming them back and hearing about their experiences and the lifelong memories they will have created.

Looking ahead, we have a number of important and exciting events coming up. The Year 12 Movie Night on Thursday 8 October will raise funds for “It’s OK Not to Be OK”, and our VCE/VM Showcase Night on Friday 16 October will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the outstanding work of our VM students. 

We are also continuing to support students through the VTAC process, and we ask families to please check in with their young person to ensure applications are completed and submitted on time. 

As always, our focus remains on supporting and challenging every student to reach their full potential. This is achieved through a shared commitment between students, families and staff, and we thank you for the role you continue to play in this partnership. 

As we head into the term break, I hope all members of our community have the opportunity to rest, recharge and spend time with family and friends. We look forward to a big and purposeful Term 4.

Our Expectations – Safe, Respectful and Inclusive Schools

It is important that we continue to hold high expectations for ourselves and for one another. At Frankston High School, we are committed to providing a school environment where every student and every staff member feels safe, respected, included, and valued. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Empathy provide an important foundation for the way we behave, communicate and interact with others.

We expect students to:

• Respect themselves, others and our shared environment by acting safely, kindly, and fairly.
• Take Responsibility for their choices, behaviour and learning, and understand that our actions have an impact on others.
• Demonstrate Resilience by embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and persevering when things are difficult.
• Show Empathy by considering the experiences and feelings of others and ensuring that everyone feels included and supported.

These expectations apply in classrooms, during breaks, on excursions and camps, in sporting activities, online and in every other aspect of school life.

There is no place in our school community for bullying, discrimination, racism or homophobic behaviour. We expect every member of our community to contribute to an environment where people are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background, identity, or differences. Creating a safe and inclusive school is a shared responsibility. We will continue to explicitly teach, reinforce and support these expectations, while responding appropriately when behaviours do not meet the standards we set for our community.
