Last week, our sister school in France, Institution Jeanne d'Arc received a package from Frankston High School, put together by volunteers.

This initiative was thanks to Roi Szczepanski (Year 12), who is not studying French, but was inspired by our sister school newsletter in which some Jeanne d'Arc students mentioned they were studying the work of Patrick White, an Australian author and one of Roi's favourites.

Roi wanted to send some books and other Australian items to our sister school to further share our culture with them. Several other students and staff were kind enough to contribute to this project, including Mia Munoz (Year 8), Edward Bechaz (Year 9), Siobhan Denny (Year 11) and Mrs Deb Bretherton (former Frankston High School English and History teacher). Thank you to everyone for their contributions!

A Sparkling French Cultural Experience at the NGV

Year 9 French students recently visited the Cartier exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, where they explored the history, creativity and craftsmanship of the world-famous French jeweller.

Student Bella Moore described the experience as "one of my favourite excursions so far this year" and particularly enjoyed seeing Cartier's famous Panther creations and the collection of stunning tiaras.

Edward Bechaz was especially impressed by the exhibition's detail and craftsmanship, saying, "The tiara room was my favourite room, with 25 tiaras all on display, each one glimmering in its own light."

The excursion provided students with a wonderful opportunity to experience French culture and design firsthand. Thank you to the French teachers for organising this memorable day.

French Word/Expression of the Week: Faire la Grasse Matinée

Meaning: This delightful French expression means "to sleep in" or "have a lazy morning." Perfect for weekends and holidays!

Examples:• Dimanche matin, j’ai fait la grasse matinée. → "On Sunday morning, I slept in." • J’adore faire la grasse matinée en hiver ! → "I love sleeping in during winter!"

Origin: The phrase comes from "gras" (meaning "fat" or "plump"), metaphorically describing a long, indulgent rest. It's a staple of the French weekend routine!

Cultural Note: In France, Sunday mornings are often reserved for faire la grasse matinée, followed by a leisurely brunch with fresh croissants. A true French weekend essential!
