Year Four

It is hard to believe that we are now a few weeks into Term Two! Students have settled well back into their learning, whilst showing the attributes of the Learner Profile.
Literacy
Over the last couple of weeks, students have been continuing to delve into their class Book Club study of The Wild Robot. They have developed their research skills by learning how to identify credible sources as well as how to skim and scan to find information quickly. They are learning how to support their understanding with evidence, and how to group facts into categories.. These skills will help them with their research about a chosen resource as part of their unit of inquiry. Students have continued to practise the writing process by adding lucky and unlucky scenarios in their Writer’s Notebook.
Mathematics
In Year Four we have been continuing to practise our additive strategies. We have learnt about how to apply the jump, partitioning and compensation strategies to worded problems in order to understand why these are important. We have also started working on probability, looking at the chances of events occurring, as well as mutually exclusive events.
Sharing the Planet
Students saw the connections between our Book Study of The Wild Robot and the real world by working in a group to imagine what it would be like if they were stranded on an island like Roz. They developed their collaborative and social skills by working together to create a poster about how they would survive using resources available on their island. They have also practised resource management scenarios to explore how countries trade with each ot
