Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Guardians,

Reading:

In reading, Year 3 students have been focusing on how authors use figurative language such as similes, metaphors, and imagery to enhance their texts. They have been learning to analyse word choices and consider why an author selected specific words and what effect they have on the reader. Students have also been practising how to identify the deeper message an author is trying to communicate through their language and images. These skills are helping students become more thoughtful and critical readers.

Writing:

In Writing, students have been exploring descriptive and figurative language to create strong images and communicate ideas about nature. They have been using adjectives, similes, and sensory language to make their writing more engaging, while also learning how to develop and expand their ideas into detailed pieces of writing.

Maths:

In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of place value through renaming 5-digit numbers in different ways. This learning has supported students to strengthen their number sense and recognise that numbers can be represented flexibly while still maintaining the same value.

Students explored breaking numbers apart using place value language (ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones) and expressed numbers in multiple forms. This helped them build confidence in identifying equivalent representations and explaining their thinking clearly.

It has been great to see students engaging with this concept and beginning to justify their reasoning using accurate mathematical language.

Inquiry:

Unit of Inquiry 2

Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea: Patterns and colours in nature inspire our creativity.

In our current inquiry, “Patterns and colours in nature inspire our creativity,” students have been exploring how the natural world influences art and design. Through thinking routines such as See, Think, Wonder and hexagonal thinking, students analysed patterns, colours, and textures found in nature and made connections to creative expression.

These routines supported students in generating thoughtful wonderings, which are now guiding our investigations. It has been wonderful to see students engage with curiosity, think critically about their observations, and confidently share their ideas.

Clay Modelling

Year 3 students recently took part in an exciting Clay Modelling Incursion, run by visiting ceramic artist Jing Liang. During the one-hour workshop, students explored how patterns, textures, and shapes found in nature can be used in art-making. Using natural materials as tools, they experimented with clay imprint techniques to create their own unique pieces on air-dry clay. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that brought our unit of inquiry to life!

Athletics Carnival

Our recent Athletics Carnival was a fantastic success, with students participating with great enthusiasm and school spirit throughout the day. It was wonderful to see everyone giving their best effort, supporting one another, and demonstrating positive sportsmanship across all events.

Students embraced a range of activities, showing determination, resilience, and a willingness to challenge themselves. Whether competing on the track or in field events, their energy and encouragement towards peers made the day enjoyable for all.
