Year One

Dear Year One Families,

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Scienceworks and the Planetarium earlier this week! Our students had an energetic day in the Think Ahead and Sportsworks exhibitions before laying back to watch the Tilt movie in the Planetarium. This connected to our Inquiry where we learnt how the Sun and the Moon cause changes on Earth

Reading

In Reading, students have been learning how to write an information report using a template to help organise their knowledge and research. We explored the purpose and features of information reports and discussed how they help readers learn facts about a topic.

Phonics

In Phonics, we focused on ‘wh’ words and practised reading and writing words such as when, where, what, and whale.

Writing

In Writing, students identified important features of information reports such as headings, facts, diagrams, and topic-specific vocabulary. They also practised researching information and organising their ideas clearly before beginning to write their own reports.

Maths

In Mathematics, students explored the concept of duration of events by learning about seconds and minutes. We discussed how different activities take different amounts of time and practised estimating and identifying events that happen quickly or take longer to complete.

Students enjoyed thinking about everyday activities and deciding whether they would take seconds or minutes to finish.
