Prep

Dear Prep parents and carers,

We have have been very busy over the past

2 weeks! The students have been very engaged and getting stuck into their learning!

Reading

In our Reading lessons we have been learning a new nursery rhyme song called 'Der Glumph the Little Green Frog' and made a craft linked to this. We have also been learning all about alliteration. We have learnt that this is when words begin with the same letter at the beginning, for example 'five funny foxes'. The students have been providing their own examples and using their names in alliteration, for example 'Silly Sam', 'Amazing Adam' and 'Dancing Daisy'. We have also been reading the tongue twister, 'She She Sells Seashells on the Seashore'. We identified many words in this rhyme beginning with 's'. At home you could have a go at saying a sentence containing alliteration with your child. Can they think of other words beginning with the same letter, for example 'Dancing dad drove in the desert'.

Writing

In our writing lessons we have been focussing on making Mother's Day and carers cards and crafts. We have been discussing what our mum's and carers do for us and how we can say thank you to them. We have been thinking about how we made the card and labelling the different parts. We have used our letter sound knowledge to help us with this. We have also been writing sentences and using our letter sound knowledge to write the first letter sound and other letter sounds we can hear. It would be excellent practice to have a go at writing at home. Can your child draw and label their favourite toy?

Maths

In our Maths learning we have been focussing on recognising common 2D shapes. We have been identifying how many sides and corners each 2D shape has and finding real life examples around the classroom and playground. We have been able to identify the following shapes:

  • circle
  • triangle
  • square
  • rectangle
  • pentagon
  • hexagon
  • heart
  • star
  • rhombus

It would be great practice to recognise shapes around the house. Can your child identify common 2D shapes using real life examples, for example the kitchen table may be a rectangle and a cushion is a square?

Inquiry

In our Inquiry unit we have been unpacking our central idea of 'Toys have Changed Over Time'. We have been comparing toys from the past and present. We also had the opportunity to play with toys which some of the teachers had brought into school - from their childhood. We had so much fun exploring the different toys and talking about which ones we like and why.

Reminders

  • As part of our Inquiry unit we will be making our own toys at the end of this term. Please bring in any recycled materials which are clean and safe to use for the students to use. This can include cereal boxes, milk/juice cartons, cardboard boxes etc.

  • Please ensure all school uniform is named in case it gets lost so we can reunite it with your child.

  • Please ensure your child has a spare change of clothes in their bag for if they have an accident.

  • Reading satchels must be brought to school daily.
