Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,
Over the past fortnight, students have continued their learning within our Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves. It has been a highly engaging and thought-provoking period, with students exploring how systems, leadership and decision-making shape societies.
Reading
In Reading, students explored a range of government systems, including democracy, monarchy and dictatorship. They developed their ability to identify key ideas, summarise information and compare how different systems operate. Students examined how leaders are chosen, how power is shared, and how citizens are treated in each system.
In the following week, students deepened their understanding by exploring the three levels of government in Australia: federal, state and local. They investigated the roles and responsibilities of each level and made connections to how decisions impact their everyday lives.
Writing
In Writing, students were introduced to persuasive texts and explored how language can be used to influence an audience. They identified the purpose of persuasion and examined different text types such as speeches, advertisements and articles.
Students then began deconstructing persuasive writing using the OREO structure (Opinion, Reason, Evidence, Opinion), before moving into developing their own ideas. They explored how audience and purpose shape the way a message is delivered and began drafting their own persuasive pieces on real-world topics such as junk food advertising and artificial intelligence.
Numeracy
In Mathematics, students explored Measurement, with a focus on capacity and volume. They practised converting between units (millilitres, litres and kilolitres), solving real-world problems, and applying their understanding to design tasks. Students investigated the relationship between volume and capacity and justified their thinking using mathematical reasoning.
In the second week, students moved into Statistics, where they explored different types of data, including categorical and numerical data. They learned to identify discrete and continuous data and began representing data using appropriate graphs and charts. Students also discussed how data is used in real-life contexts to inform decisions.
Unit of Inquiry – How We Organise Ourselves
Throughout the fortnight, students developed a deeper understanding of government systems and how power is organised and used. A highlight of the learning was an interactive experience where students explored the impact of different systems, prompting rich discussion around fairness, leadership and citizen voice.
Students have begun making strong connections between these systems and their own roles as active and informed citizens. This learning will continue to build as we explore how governments operate within Australia and globally.
Canberra Camp – Group 1
In Week 3, our first group of Year 6 students attended the Canberra Camp alongside Mrs Kotevski, Miss Puis and Mr Hart. Students had an incredible opportunity to visit key national landmarks and deepen their understanding of Australia’s government and history.
Highlights of the camp included visits to significant sites such as Parliament House, where students explored how decisions are made at a federal level, as well as a range of cultural and historical locations that brought their classroom learning to life. Students demonstrated independence, responsibility and excellent behaviour throughout the experience, representing our school with pride.
We look forward to welcoming them back and hearing about their experiences.
The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)
Students from our school will soon be undertaking (or have recently undertaken), an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $45.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Summer Sports
Summer Sports took place at the end of week two, with students representing the school across a variety of sports including volleyball, cricket, tennis and softball.
It was fantastic to see students demonstrating teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the day. Many teams showed strong skill development and determination, with several achieving excellent results. Most importantly, students represented the school with pride and supported one another both on and off the field.
We are incredibly proud of all students who participated.
Year 6 Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday of Week 4 students participated in our annual Athletics Carnival held at the Werribee Athletics Track. Representing their house colours with pride, students took part in a wide range of track and field events, demonstrating determination, sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day. It was fantastic to see students encouraging one another and giving their best effort in each event. The carnival concluded with a series of exciting relay races, where students worked collaboratively to compete against the other houses and finish the day on a high. We congratulate all students for their positive participation and enthusiasm across the event.
On Wednesday, we were fortunate enough to have our very own Year 6 photographer, Hugo Gibson from 6J, roaming around to capture special moments from our Athletics Day. This is a passion of Hugo’s, and we are delighted to share his photos with our community.
Looking Ahead
We look forward to continuing our exploration of government systems and supporting students in developing their persuasive writing skills. In the coming weeks, our second group will attend the Canberra Camp, and we are excited to hear about their experiences.
Thank you for your continued support.
