Term 1 - What's Been On

In Week 6, we continued our term’s theme of Travelling Around the World by visiting, learning and sharing some of my cultural background with the children to share and promote diversity through “A Taste of Indonesia.” Throughout week six, we tasted Indonesian food and culture. I took the opportunity to share some of my experiences when I lived there as a little girl and how my mum moved to Australia at five years old with her other six siblings. On Monday the highlight was sharing our stories about the weekend in our yarn circle (mini meeting) and making our Wonton Pizza Cups for TC Tucker. Tuesday’s highlight was celebrating Pancake Day with Coconut Pancakes (Kue Cubir) and learning an Indonesian nursery rhyme. Additionally, the children tried Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice) and Gado Gado (like a tofu salad with fresh veggies and a peanut based sauce) for the first time and enjoyed these staple dishes.

On Thursday, the highlight was being hands on baking and using Air-Dry Clay to make Komodo Dragons, Rafellisa Arnoldii (Corpse Flower found in Borneo) and the Indonesian Flag. In addition, the children also made and tried Martabak Manis (which is a thick sweet pancake) traditionally made with chocolate sprinkles spread in between layers. Through these activities, the children explored cultural sensitivity and respect for one another, discovering the joy of learning and appreciating each other’s backgrounds. Additional activities included, making our own story for the Travelling Book (we named it “When the Crayons went Crazy”), making collaborative art like the Balinese Penjor, designing our own Batik (wax resist dyeing technique used for creating intricate patterns and designs on various textiles) patterns, playing Grounders and decorating our Reflection Journal — rounding out a respectful, fun and educational program.

Last week (Week 7), we continued our term’s theme of Travelling Around the World by visiting and learning and trying new games and foods through “Little Samurai Week.” Throughout week seven, we tasted Japanese food, music and talked about our favourite Anime characters and movies. After the long weekend the children made it clear that they had missed (one of the best parts of BSC and ASC) cooking at TheirCare. This week I challenged the children’s cooking skills, getting them to make their own Sushi (Maki Rolls). I thought that the children did very well with this Let’s Cook challenge. Wednesday’s highlight was making our Strawberry Yoghurt Bites for TC Tucker. The children thoroughly enjoy being a part of cooking and the reward of tasting something they worked hard to create.

On Thursday, the highlight was drawing pictures for our story for The Travelling Book (we named it “When the Crayons went Crazy”) and making Mochi. Through these activities, the children explored cultural sensitivity and respect for one another, discovering the joy of learning and appreciating each other’s backgrounds. Additional activities included, playing Kemari (Keepy-Uppy but with a soccer ball) and Janken (Paper, Scissors Rock), writing Haiku poems and decorating our Reflection Journal —rounding out a respectful, fun and educational program.

These experiences were part of our carefully planned program, designed in collaboration with the children and parents/carers, ensuring everyone felt included and engaged. By integrating cultural and social-emotional learning, we enriched the week with hands-on fun, creativity, and a sense of belonging for all.

Summer Holiday Program Highlights - Level Up!

Here's a Recap

During the Summer Holidays was all about levelling up the fun at TheirCare Boroondara. The three weeks where an engaging and enriching experience for everyone involved in our program. Throughout the three weeks, we provided various learning environments daily including creative, physical health, scientific, experiential, natural, cultural, and two cooking experiences (each week) and excursions to the Timezone, Rivoli Cinemas, Glow Golf and Archery Attack. Each day was packed with exciting, fun and engaging experiences. During the first week, the highlights included making Butterfly, hosting our own Game Show, seeing Moana 2, Airbrush Octopus Art, playing Laser Tag, Arcade games and baking Butterfly Cakes. As always, educators and children worked in collaboration to design additional activities to maximise the fun and ensure all children were engaged in the program. In week two, the children enjoyed making Salt Dough Ornaments and Paper Sunglasses, seeing Sonic the Hedgehog 3, playing golf and grounders, baking tasty baked goods like the Hedgehog Slice we made and learning all about water safety with Haley. During the last week, we didn't want to say goodbye to the new friends we made, coming from other schools. The major highlights of this week included, making Oatmeal cookies and experiencing Virtual Reality games for the first time, Drip Art, Lego building competition, Cup Rockets and learning how to use a bow and arrow.

If you would like your child to attend our service, it is essential that you have booked them in through Fully Booked, submitted any medical documentation and updated your child’s enrolment, ensuring all medical conditions are listed on their enrolment. It’s important for our staff to understand these conditions and have the appropriate training, to look after your children. Your child will not be able to attend until our staff have this medical information.
