Graphing in Foundation 2025
The Foundation children are thoroughly enjoying getting to know one another and learning all about their class community. During Maths sessions, Foundation children have been busy collecting, sorting and organising information to answer practical questions about themselves and their peers, such as what’s your favourite colour, when is your birthday and what animal would be your favourite if you visited the Melbourne Zoo? Foundation children have then used pictures to display this information in the form of class graphs.
Not only have the children loved seeing their discoveries about each other come to life on the classroom walls, they have also been able to use these graphs to draw conclusions, such as identifying the most or least popular colour in the class, which months have the most and least birthdays, and so on.

These tasks not only explore the Statistics area of the new Foundation Mathematics 2.0 Curriculum, but also provide authentic opportunities for children to practice the Number and Place Value skills of counting, subitising, comparing and ordering.
What graphs could you create about your family and friends at home?
Echi Echidna Adventures
At the beginning of Week 9 Zahra was the next FKJ student to share her exciting adventures with Echi Echidna. His first adventure was to explore Zahra's home. Echi looked at Zahra's brother's crystal collection. He then helped Zahra to put coins into the blessing jar to celebrate Ramadan. Zahra then shared some photos with Echi of her Mum's assembly presentation about Persian New Year - Nawruz. Echi enjoyed listening to this information about how Zahra's family celebrates this important festivity. Zahra's family then visited Epping Hall to take part in a big Community Iftar. Zahra and Echi did some colouring in activities and met Zahra's friend Niki! On the weekend, Zahra and Echi did some painting and Zahra taught Echi how to paint without going over the lines. You are such a great teacher Zahra! The last adventure was to visit the shopping centre together with Zahra's father. Zahra's father bought some chips to share! Yum! Thank you so much Zahra for sharing your fantastic adventures with your grade. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to the fun times you had with Echi!
In Week 10 Owen happily shared his exciting Echi adventures with the class. Owen had more fun adventures with this cuddly fellow! First Owen took Echi to the local park. Echi and Owen went down the spiral slide and ran and chased each other on the fresh green grass. I wonder who ran the fastest? The next adventure was to visit the shopping centre and go and buy a toy with Owen's big brother, Allen. Owen and Allen both chose a Ninjago Lego toy - you are both so lucky! When Owen was at the toy shop he found a huge Lego racing car and decided to show Echi how to drive it. Echi jumped into the car, put on his safety harness and zoomed around the racing track with Owen! What fun! The last adventure was to visit the supermarket and buy some groceries. Owen tried to scan Echi at the checkout to see how much he cost. Unfortunately, Echi didn't have a barcode and so he couldn't be scanned. What a shame.
Thank you Owen for sharing this fun week with Echi - we thoroughly enjoyed listening to your fun tales!
We look forward to seeing and hearing more Echi adventures in Term Two!
