Year Two

Welcome to Term 3 Week 10.

We hope all the year 2s had a great time exploring the Saltwater crocodile park. They were all very immersed in the natural beauty of and are showing enthusiasm towards our unit of inquiry. It has been a great learning experience as we near the end of term.

Reading

In our reading, we have been exploring a range of online and physical texts about landforms. We've read texts about deserts, rivers, plateaus and more. Students have been improving their reading skill by understanding new information and applying their understanding by comparing characteristics and features of different landforms. As the term comes to a close, we urge all students to continue with their reading at home as it has been so beneficial to their learning and wellbeing.

Writing

Over the past 2 weeks, we have continued to learn about the non-fiction genre and writing to inform the reader. Students have learned to write about a topic and classify all the important parts of the topic. For example, we wrote informative texts about the Saltwater Crocodile park. Students wrote paragraphs that include descriptive, factual statements about the park. Together, we learned about the different kinds of flora and fauna species within the park to include in the informative texts. We're continuing to improve our writing by re-reading to ensure it makes sense and has all punctuation necessary.

Maths

In mathematics, the grade 2s have learned about the connection between multiplication and division. We've focused on fact families, doubles and halves, known facts and skip counting to help solve problems efficiently. For example, we want our students to know that 3 groups of 4 is 12, 4 3s make 12, 12 divided between 4 is 3 and 12 shared between 3 is 4 each. Understanding that different terms mean the same thing is important for their understanding of the concepts.

Inquiry

We've all learned a lot in our new unit of inquiry; Every Place on Earth has Different Characteristics.

A lot of students have heard of landforms like canyons, hills and plateaus without understanding their features and what makes them what they are. A lot of students seem to enjoy learning about these incredible natural features of our world. We look forward to engaging them in creative activities where they can recreate their own idea of the landforms.

End of Term.

We're nearing the end of term and hope you all enjoy the two week break. We look forward to continuing all the hard work and learning together in term 4.
