Year One

It has been a busy end to the term in Year One, with students working hard and building on their learning across Reading, Writing and Maths. We have been exploring interesting new topics, developing our skills and putting our learning into practice through a range of engaging activities. It has been wonderful to see the students’ confidence and enthusiasm continue to grow as we approach the end of the term.

Reading

In Reading, we are continuing to enjoy books by the author Eric Carle. Students are exploring a range of his texts and discussing the similarities and differences between them.

We are also learning to compare fiction and non-fiction texts, identifying the different features and purposes of each type of book. Students are developing their understanding of the difference between facts and opinions and learning how to identify information that can be proven as a fact compared with someone's personal thoughts or beliefs.

Writing

In Writing, students have been researching an animal of their choice and collecting interesting and important information to include in their own information texts.

Students have been gathering information about their animal's classification, habitat, diet, adaptations and appearance. They are now using their research to write, edit and publish their completed information texts.

Students will then have the opportunity to present their information to the class, sharing what they have learnt and teaching others some interesting facts about their chosen animal.

Maths

In Mathematics, we are learning about multiplication and division. Students are exploring how equal groups, repeated addition and sharing can help us understand these concepts.

We have been working with arrays to represent multiplication in a visual way. Students are putting their learning into practice by creating an Array City, using rows and columns to build and represent different multiplication problems. This hands-on activity is helping students develop their understanding of multiplication while encouraging them to explain and justify their mathematical thinking.

Phonics

In Phonics, we are focusing on the different sounds that the letters 'oo' can make in words. Students are practising identifying these sounds when reading and spelling and using Elkonin boxes to segment words into their individual sounds. This is helping students to strengthen their phonemic awareness and apply their knowledge when reading and writing.

A Reminder for the Holidays

Wishing all our Year One families a very happy and safe holiday. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break and has lots of fun with family and friends.

A reminder that hats are required at school in Term 4; so please make sure your child brings their hat each day when we return.
