Tips to manage period pain at school

Students can manage period cramps at school by planning, taking approved pain relievers, and staying hydrated.

We encourage students to avoid leaving class to manage symptoms and instead attend the health centre for assistance during their breaks.

Dealing with cramps during class is hard, but these simple steps can help you feel better:

Quick relief at school

  • Use stick-on heat patches: Buy thin, disposable heat patches that stick to your underwear or skin under your clothes. They give off steady warmth to relax your muscles without needing a microwave or plug.

  • Take pain medicine: Discuss with a parent and your school nurse about taking over-the-counter medicine like ibuprofen or paracetamol.

  • Drink plenty of water: Bring a water bottle to class and sip it all day. Staying hydrated stops the bloating that makes cramps feel worse.

  • Eat smart snacks: Pack a banana or healthy snack.

  • Try gentle movement: Take a short walk during a break or do light stretches between classes to help blood flow and ease tension.
  •
  • Breathe and rest: Sit quietly in the library or restroom for a few minutes. Take slow, deep breaths to help your body relax.
