Year 1/2's

It has been another few busy and exciting weeks of learning in the 1/2 classrooms. How are we almost at the holidays already?!
We would like to thank all of our students and families for a fantastic term. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break and some time to relax and recharge.
In Maths, we finalised our learning about multiplication and division. Students continued to build their understanding of making equal groups, sharing and using different strategies to solve problems. We will continue to revisit these concepts during Daily Review. We have now moved into our learning about time, including duration, calendars and reading analogue clocks.
In Literacy, we finished reading The Lorax and have begun exploring The Gentle Genius of Trees. Students have been learning how to write a well-structured paragraph, including topic sentences, supporting details and concluding sentences. We have also explored the features of informative posters, identifying how headings, pictures and facts can help share information with a reader. Students are now working towards publishing their own informative posters to showcase their learning.
In Wellbeing, we focused on interacting with others using respect, kindness and understanding. Through class discussions and games, students explored what makes a good friend and how our words and actions can make others feel. To celebrate R U OK? Day, students created a three-tiered cake, with each layer representing an ‘ingredient’ of a good friend.
In ICT, Year 2’s have continued exploring with Google Sheets and created Book Week themed wordsearches for their peers to solve. They worked on changing cell sizes to create a grid and giving the word search a background.
In PMP, our activities have been somewhat guided by the weather! We’ve had a range of PMP sessions based on developing co-ordination, balance, control, and confidence through a range of engaging activities. Students rotate through different stations; the most recent ones have been rocket throwing, kicking and maintaining control of soccer balls, bouncing tennis balls into buckets, skipping, and beanbag toss. Each activity targets a different skill, but they all work together to help students improve their coordination and body control. For example, throwing and beanbag toss build aim and hand-eye co-ordination, while kicking and bouncing balls develop timing, feel and control. Skipping helps with rhythm and whole-body coordination. Students have been showing fantastic progress, becoming more confident and coordinated as they move through each activity. It has been awesome to see the kids taking turns, celebrating each other’s successes, and showing positive teamwork throughout each session.
Our PBL activities were inspired by much-loved picture books. Students set up a fruit shop inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar, recreated the bear hunt using sensory materials from Going on a Bear Hunt, designed their own Rainbow Fish with a special sparkly piece, explored farm-themed dramatic play inspired by Noni the Pony, and built houses from different materials inspired by The Three Little Pigs.
Through these activities, students developed their creativity, communication, collaboration, problem-solving and storytelling skills while celebrating the joy of books and reading!
We celebrated Book Week with our dress-up day and enjoyed lots of opportunities to share our love of books and stories. We also embraced the theme ‘Symphony of Stories’ by recreating book covers as vinyl records and writing musical-themed stories. We loved seeing so many creative and unique costumes this year!
Thank you to all the families who donated books for our Book Swap, which helped raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We really appreciated your generosity, and the students loved choosing a new book to take home.
A special mention also goes to our students for their fantastic performance in this year’s Busking for Change song. They performed so well and absolutely loved rehearsing and practising together in class!
1/2N and 1/2B have wrapped up their final cooking sessions for the term! Students had an absolute ball getting into the kitchen, developing their cooking skills and, of course, enjoying the delicious food they created.
A special thank you to all of our wonderful helpers who generously gave their time to come along and support the students. Your help made such a difference and helped make our cooking sessions such a fun and successful experience for everyone. We couldn’t do it without you!
