Year 1/2

Hello 1/2 families! Students have made a great return to Term 2. We have a busy term ahead with humanities projects, incursions and the swimming program. We are looking forward to all of those events!
Literacy
In Literacy, we have been exploring persuasive writing. We have learnt about forming a contention, which is what you think or believe—your opinion. Students created a triarama to present their persuasive arguments about why we shouldn’t be afraid of bees.
We also learnt about two persuasive techniques: repetition and using facts to make our arguments stronger.
Phonics- In Phonics, the Grade 1 students have been focusing on the digraphs ow, oa and o_e, which all make the long “o” sound. The Grade 2 students have been learning about the trigraphs ear, eer, air and are.
Maths
In Maths this term, students have been learning about the foundations of addition. Students have been solidifying part-part-whole knowledge, by using number bonds and bar models.
Students have been using concrete materials, drawing pictures, and learning about number sentences. Next week students will be challenged with learning how to add 2-digit numbers using strategies like number lines, partitioning and the split strategy.
Students have also been learning about data and graphing. Students have learnt how to collect data, catergorise data, and create picture and column graphs.
Humanities
In Humanities, we have been immersed in the concept of place so that we can understand what a sense of place means to different people. We have been immersed into the places in Moriac so that we become curious to learn more about our community and what services the businesses in our community provide. Example: Moriac General Store “What services does the Moriac General provide?” Students have created a map of local places in Moriac and students have been creating a diorama of a local place in Moriac.
Respectful Relationships
In Respectful Relationships students have been learning about their emotions, including anxiety and anger. Students have learnt what this feel likes in their bodies, and strategies of how to regulate these emotions.
Responsible Pet Ownership incursion
In week 2, students attended the responsible pet incursion. Students learnt about animal safety with cats and dog and met Wilfred the dog.
Braveheart incursion
On Thursday, at school we attended Bravehearts’ live incursion. We met the lovable lion cub ‘Ditto’ and a specially trained presenter, this fun, interactive show taught us about personal safety education.
Students learnt about:
- Differentiating safe and unsafe feelings
- Recognising the body’s warning signs
- Body ownership and that it is ok to say no
- Helping children name public and private parts using anatomically correct names
- Reinforcing that there is no secret that children cannot tell someone
- What to do if you feel unsafe or unsure
We hope you all have a wonderful Mothers Day and enjoy the time with your beautiful families.
Grade 1/2 Team.
