French

Prep-2

Students have been working each week to "chat". Using repeated actions accompanied with French dialogue, students have developed such confidence moving around the room greeting each other, introducing themselves and asking questions.

Using picture books, students have been learning about colours in French. Creating their own mini picture dictionaries students have used them to decipher and create a 'mixed up' picture.

Over the coming weeks students will continue to work on chatting and colours as well as begin their immersion into French architecture. They will begin to build and replicate French landmarks that they create mini fact files about.

YEARS 3-6

This term, we have started using a tool called Duolingo for Schools. Duolingo is a free app designed to help students learn languages. Because Duolingo can be downloaded to any smartphone, and even used on a web browser on computers, it means that students will have access to additional practice to French at their fingertips.

On my end, Duolingo for Schools allows me to track the work that the students are doing as well as the ability to create assignments that are tailored specifically to what will best meet the needs of each student. This means that every minute your students spend on Duolingo will be spent working at their “just-right” level, rather than on a class-wide assignment.

Please consider supporting your child at home by encouraging them to spend time with Duolingo. Encourage them to maintain their Streak by ensuring that they log time throughout the week.

This term we are focussing on French architecture. For the last few weeks students have collated what they know about French landmarks and posed questions. Those questions have helped to shape the learning and structure for the term.

Beginning with the Eiffel Tower students have created some simple fact files and have begun to build their own replicas in small groups, using only newspapers and masking tape rather than iron and rivets like the original structure.

Over the coming weeks students will use various methods and materials and replicate a range of French landmarks, developing persistence and techniques that create strong, sturdy models.
