Year 3/4

Welcome back to Term Two
Students have hit the ground running this term. They have been very settled and have reestablished classroom expectations and reconnected with classmates.
On Friday 24th, the students took part in the school's ANZAC Day ceremony. They showed the school values and were amazing during the service.
3/4A and 3/4B have had pre-service teachers working in their rooms, and the children have enjoyed the extra support. We thank Rhys Cameron and Chris Oppert for their time and wish them well in their teaching careers.
LITERACY
In Literacy, we have been building a strong routine that supports both reading and writing skills. We have begun our class novel Brindabella, a heartfelt story about a boy named Pender and his unusual friendship with a hand-reared kangaroo joey. As part of our novel study, we focus on different elements of the text by responding in a variety of ways, closely examining the author’s craft, and practising how to apply these techniques in our own writing. Alongside this, we complete daily literacy reviews where we revisit important concepts such as parts of speech, comprehension strategies, spelling, handwriting and typing. We have also been strengthening our phonics knowledge through a focus on vowel sounds, while beginning to explore morphology to better understand how words are built. In addition, we continue to develop our reading fluency using engaging texts such as Kangaroos and ANZAC Day.
NUMERACY
In Mathematics, we have been using a variety of strategies for addition and subtraction. This includes the Jump Strategy and the Split Strategy for two and three-digit numbers. Some students who are extending their skills have also been working with four‑digit numbers. We have been practising our fluency as well, completing sets of addition or subtraction equations and tracking both the number completed and the number answered correctly. We record these results in our maths books so we can see our progress over time.
HUMANITIES
Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about Australia and the wider world. We have been exploring a map of Australia and recording the states and their capital cities. We have also been discussing famous landmarks and “big things,” such as the Twelve Apostles, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Big Pineapple. In addition, we have been learning First Nations names for different places and what those names mean — for example, “meeting of the waters” for Echuca and “bend” for Berri. In our Humanities books, we have a world map where we are labelling the continents and beginning to add well‑known cities from around the globe.
WELLBEING
In our Wellbeing lessons, we have been focusing on vocabulary to describe our emotions and developing an understanding of how different emotions feel. We completed an activity where we learned to identify a range of emotions and arrange them in order of intensity — for example, unhappy, sad, and miserable, or happy, delighted, and ecstatic. We also explored different techniques we can use to control our anger. This development of emotional literacy aims to assist students in coping with stress in a positive way.
EVENTS
ATHLETICS:
Our students had an amazing day at athletics, showing fantastic energy, teamwork, and enthusiasm from start to finish. They cheered loudly for their peers, celebrating everyone’s efforts and successes, which created a positive and supportive atmosphere throughout the day. It was wonderful to see so many students stepping outside their comfort zones and giving every activity a go, whether it was running, jumping, or throwing. It was a day full of encouragement, determination, and school spirit that they should all be very proud of.
CROSS COUNTRY:
Well done to our Year 3/4 runners who qualified for Cross Country on 8th May.

PJ DAY
The last day of Term 1 showed students at Moriac Primary School showing wonderful community spirit by supporting The Pyjama Foundation through a fun and meaningful Pyjama Day. Everyone, including the teachers, came to school dressed in their cosy pyjamas to help raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital. It was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and arriving at school just like they had hopped straight out of bed. Everyone enjoyed the comfort and coziness of their PJs, all while knowing they were helping support an important cause.
