Term 2- Week 1-3

Welcome to Term 2

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope the break provided an opportunity for rest, family time, and a chance to recharge for the busy and exciting term ahead.

It has been wonderful to see students return with such a positive start. Classrooms have quickly settled into productive routines, and students are already engaged in their learning with enthusiasm and focus. The strong foundations built in Term 1 are clearly evident, and it is pleasing to see students continuing to build on their skills and confidence.

Term 2 is shaping up to be a full and rewarding one, with a range of learning opportunities, events, and experiences planned across the school. We are looking forward to seeing the hard work, persistence, and growth that began earlier in the year continue to flourish.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support. We value the strong partnership between school and home and look forward to another successful term working together.

Anzac Day

On Friday 24th April, we held a special ANZAC day ceremony with all students and staff at our school. Our student leaders spoke about the history and importance of ANZAC day, flying our flags at half mast and playing the Last Post and Rouse and then flying our flags at full height as part of the tradition.

All the students present at the ceremony were highly respectful and this was noted in particular during the minute's silence. It is important as a school we commemorate such occasions so that our students have the opportunity to be part of and learn about Australia's history during difficult times and wars. Thank you to all the students for their respect and participation during this assembly.

Preps 2027

Hard to believe, but schools at this time of the year are fast preparing for the new Prep enrolments for 2027! It feels that this begins earlier and earlier each year and we are no different. We have begun touring prospective families around our school with the first of the Prep 2027 Tours already complete and another few to go.

We have a close relationship with the local Moriac Pre-School and therefore do know that there are many 'kinder kids' that are ready for school in 2027. We have had many enquiries so far, but do need to plan for and secure positions for our students and families that live in our designated neighbourhood zone as part of the enrolment procedures in Government Schools.

Whilst we do not expect existing families with students at our school to attend tours if they do not wish to, we are asking anyone with children at home intending to enrol for 2027 to make contact with our office before the term ends so that we can forecast and plan for 2027.  Enrolment forms are readily available and your details added to our database so that your child holds a secure spot.

Education Week

About Education Week

Education Week is an annual celebration of public education in Victoria.

In 2026, Victoria celebrates Education Week from Monday 18 May to Friday 22 May.

The theme of 2026 Education Week is Showcase your school, encouraging school communities to celebrate what’s great about their school.

Every Victorian school is great in its own unique way, whether it’s the people, the place, the learning opportunities or the school community.

At Moriac Primary School we are planning on asking our students, what makes our school great?

We will be asking our students in the lead up to the week to draw or write about the best part of our school and each year level will select some students to share this at our assembly that will be held that week. You may like to discuss this with your children at home in the evenings as a prompt to get them talking about their school, what makes a school great and why they think ours is one!

We will dedicate special time in the school assembly during Education Week to celebrate what makes our school great and invite all families to attend.

PnF Committee Updates

There is much happening in the world of PnF with our big golf day coming up in June. Please see the separate page in this newsletter for further details regarding this event. Whether you can help out on the day, sponsor in some way or donate goods, all proceeds and funds raised from the day will go directly into our school music program.

Supporting the music program-

Mr Jared Smith runs an excellent performing arts program at our school as most of you are already aware but recently he came to see me to discuss the need for more musical instruments that he could use when teaching students music. Any time I enter the space during music, the one takeaway I have is how engaged the students are and how happy they look. So when Mr Smith asked for more instruments, I stopped and paid attention!

Mr Smith has specifically asked to update our wooden xylophones that the students use when learning about musical notes, tones and melodies and when I asked how much these cost I must admit I was shocked as they range greatly, but a student size xylophone is around $400 each! Buying a class set would therefore cost around $10,000, money we just don't have. Jared suggested buying a few a year but after discussing this at council this week and suggesting our Golf Day proceeds go straight to this, we decided this might be a great option. So we are pleased to announce that all fundraised money will go directly towards the music program and we look forward to making this happen for our students!

Mother's Day/Special Person Pots-

Another initiative recently was the paint the pots for a special person/mum for upcoming mother's day. This again was supported via the Visual Arts program with Mr Smith ensuring all students in our school were given the opportunity to paint a pot and add seedlings as a special gift for their mum/special person.

Coming up in Term 3-

During Term 3, we have decided to allocate a date for the postponed colour run! This will be the second last day of the term, where the weather is more forgiving for many reasons. No shortage of water, less dry ground resulting in muddy puddles and a higher chance we might secure the fire truck without the risk of it needing to attend to a real fire on the day.

It was really difficult to cancel it and then make a plan for a new day that still felt special for our students, is supported by PnF and also at a school level, the right people here to enable it to happen.

Traditionally our last day of term 3 is our footy colours day, which we would like to keep therefore the second last day of term 3, will be the colour run. More details will come regarding this through Compass the the School Fun Run portal and the good news is we have all the left over powder from last year still ready to be used, so double the colour.

The PnF committee will seek support and volunteers for this event to occur! So keep an eye out.

We would like to thank all our parent helpers, volunteers, supporters of the PnF, we could not ensure these events would occur without you!

Annual Report

Each year schools are required to provide an annual report to their school community that highlights the year prior including the many achievements that occurred in both the learning and wellbeing. In particular it helps to communicate to the community how the school is tracking towards strategic goals, provides an overall profile of the school including the financial position and tracks student data along with school surveys that are sent out annually.

Our Annual Report to the school community for 2025 was presented to school council during the start of Term 2 and is now finalised and on our school's website under resources.

Early Drop Offs/ Kelly Club

A small reminder to families that are dropping off their children to school early, to please remember that there is no formal supervision in our school grounds before 8:45am as part of our workforce agreement. Often there are staff present, but they are not technically on duty at this time and therefore having your child at school before this comes with a significant risk.

Kelly Club offer before school care for those families that need to get to work and we are encouraging you to take up this offer if it is helpful. Please see the final page of the newsletter for details about Kelly Club and upcoming programs.

For those families who have children walking or riding to school, please ensure they time their departure to get to school at around 8:45am so that they are not here too early. Lately we have had an increase in the number of children being dropped off early and as the weather is starting to turn and become colder and wetter, we want all students to be as safe as possible. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Finally, wishing all the mothers, step-mums, grandmothers and special ladies that play a significant role in our community a very happy Mothers Day this Sunday. We hope you all enjoy the day with the families around you and get to put your feet up and relax!

Enjoy your weekend,
