5/6 CLASSROOM

It’s been a great start to Term 2 in our Grade 5/6 classroom, even with the shorter week. Students have settled back into routines quickly and returned with a positive, focused attitude. It’s been lovely hearing about their holiday adventures and seeing them reconnect.
We’ve revisited our classroom expectations and are setting ourselves up for a successful term. The classroom has been calm, productive, and full of students having a go.
We’re looking forward to a busy and exciting term ahead.
English
Our Term 2 focus is explanatory writing, with students learning how to plan and launch a space mission, following our reading of Deadly Science – The Solar System. Students will be building their understanding of how to clearly explain a process, using accurate information and well-structured writing.
We will then move into our next class text, Us Mob Walawurru, where students will explore factual recounts and begin to look more closely at character analysis, developing their ability to respond thoughtfully to what they read.
SpellEx has now been introduced in our classroom, and students are engaging well with the structured, explicit lessons. It’s been great to see them building their confidence and applying their spelling knowledge more independently in their writing.
Maths
In Maths this term, we will be focusing on perimeter and area, as well as continuing to build our understanding of fractions and decimals. Students will be developing their skills in measuring, calculating, and applying these concepts to a range of real-life problems.
Inquiry
In Term 2, Inquiry learning in Grade 5/6 will focus on how humans rely on the environment for different types of resources, including natural, human and capital.
Students will begin by exploring what the environment is, before moving into the idea of needs and wants. They will also look at and compare different practices, including sustainable approaches used by First Nations peoples.
Throughout the unit, students will build their understanding of sustainability and learn about the positive impact they can have on the environment in their everyday lives.
Grade 6 Shirts
Our Grade 6 students are looking fantastic in their St Mary’s Rushworth shirts. It’s always so special to see our senior students together, proudly representing their year level and our school community.
They have made a really positive start to the term, settling back into routines with a great attitude and showing a strong commitment to their learning. It has been wonderful to see them stepping confidently into their leadership roles around the school, supporting younger students and modelling our school values each day.
They are setting a fantastic example for others, and we look forward to seeing them continue to grow as leaders throughout the term.
