Visual Arts

It has been buzzing and busy in the art room. The children have been choosing their work to go into the art show and have just added their final touches. They are excited to see how it is all coming together. It has been a busy time for everyone, students and teachers alike and I could not be more impressed with everyone putting in the work and being so willing to help each other along the way. The feeling of kindness and inclusivity in the art room is making me, and I’m sure many others feel eternally grateful.

The children can't wait to share their work with you at our art show, Connections.

We have had a wonderful time creating some gratefulness totems to share with everyone and to help us express our connection to community and each other through our gratefulness garden.

Wednesday October 23rd

Here are some sneak peaks at some of the beautiful work in the show from Ms V's classes. Firstly connecting with nature and our 'Forever Gardens' created by 0C. Inspired by Japanese artist Azuma Makato's Chaotic Garden exhibit at the NGV Triennial, we collected leaves, dried them, then arranged them creatively in laminating sheets. Students then added some bug and butterfly drawings, we laminated them and circled them in recycled embroidery frames.

Some more amazing work from 0C started with crayon textural rubbings, followed by a colourful food dye resist. The children then choose a favourite animal to draw and decorate with different shapes and lines, cut them out and pasted over the resist background- stunning work!

Next, let's have a sneak peak at some of the fabulous art created by 2B. Inspired by famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, we discovered her love of pumpkins, toadstools and all things 'dots'. Students made a sculpture of their own choice, painted it and made it dotty in 'Yayoi' style. They also made a matching background house with spots using some fun new dot printers.

We also looked at some artists work from the Joan Miro Gallery in Spain and took inspiration from author/illustrator Mies van Hout in the book 'Friends'. 2B had some fun making connections with 'Imaginary Friends' using oil pastels to draw and resist with food dye. These creative artworks are full of emotions and ideas about friendship both real and imagined and each has their own story to tell.

The art show is going to be absolutely spectacular!

Physical Education

AFL Roadshow

On Monday, our AFL Roadshow incursion, provided by SEDA Activations, was a huge success! The students had a fantastic time participating in the various AFL-themed activities, with the inflatable jumping castle for marking proving to be a major hit. It was wonderful to see all the students giving each activity a go and thoroughly enjoying their time out on the oval. The energy and enthusiasm were infectious, making the day memorable for everyone involved!

District Athletics

Last Tuesday, 17th September, 55 students proudly represented SEPS at the District Athletics Carnival held at Duncan McKinnon Reserve. These talented athletes were selected for their performances at our School House Athletics Carnival early in Term 3.

Our SEPS students gave it their all, achieving many personal bests and demonstrating incredible sportsmanship by encouraging their fellow competitors.

A huge congratulations to all participants, with special mention to the following placegetters:

Pippa M – 1st in the 800 metres
Dace K – 1st in the 100 metres sprint and 3rd in the 200 metres sprint
Roman I – 2nd in the 1500 metres
Sunni T – 2nd in the hurdles

We wish these students the best of luck as they go on to represent SEPS and the Seaside District at the upcoming Division competition. Go SEPS!

Mandarin

This week, we are celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节, Zhōngqiū Jié) in our Mandarin class! This festival, also known as the Moon Festival, took place on 17th September this year, and I hope you had a chance to see the beautiful full moon. As part of our celebration, students will be making paper lanterns and engaging in traditional crafts, which symbolize light and hope during this special time. We are excited to bring these cultural elements into our learning environment.

Along with crafting, students will learn about the history and significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival, including famous legends like the story of Chang'e, the Moon Goddess. We'll explore how the festival is celebrated across different Chinese-speaking cultures, helping students deepen their language skills and cultural understanding.

Performing Arts

The show must go on! Book week can be a fraught time the performing arts room. While stories are at the heart of what we do, and colourful costumes are often employed, some costumes are more practical than others. That said it was amazing to see princesses, wizards, butterflies and all manner of characters joining in the drumming and acro-balance lessons.
