Level 5: Connect

5A Michelle Stainforth, 5B Joshua Miller, 5C Michael Day

AFL Broadshow

On Monday the 16th of September, students participated in a 40 minute AFL skills session. Students kicked, marked, handballed and weaved around different inflattable obstacles and skills stations. Students who have not engaged with the sport before were able to trial and practise the skills, and students who are familiar with the sport were able to hone their skills and get some coaching too.

Upstanders

On Wednesday the 11th of September, our Upstanders and Peer Mediators travelled to Brighton Town Hall to participate in a forum with 4 other primary schools in the Bayside area. The day consisted of presentations by schools around being a leader in our school community, and qualities that make a good upstander. Our students were also given the chance to mingle, play and talk with other students about their experience in the Upstanders program. The day was a huge success and we are super proud of our Level 5's for representing the school so well.

Literacy

Our final two weeks came around quickly, and students took every opportunity to wrap up their progress this Term. Students recorded their final reading of Harry Potter, self assessing their prosody against a rubric. In writing, students continued to use elemnets of our mentor text 'Iceberg' to personify animals and objects, as well as using animals and features of climate change to influence their planning and introductions of their informative reports.

Maths

Grid referencing and ratios rounded out what was a jampacked Term for Maths. Students enlarged 2D shapes proportionately, find and identify landmarks on a map, and give explcit directional instructions using compass language. Towards the end of the Term, students were given a Melbourne Zoo map and told to give directions from the main gate to an animal of their choosing.

Write A Book In A Day

On Wednesday, some of our students had a wonderful opportunity to participate in writing and illustrating a book from start to finish. They were given a theme and five words which guided their inspiration. The students collaborated together to create some wonderful work, starting at 7.45am and working all the way through to 8.00pm. They were enormously fortunate to have the guidance and support of Josie Ford, who enabled the students to create and develop their ideas, culminating in three marvellous contributions.

"...all money raised going directly to The Kids’ Cancer Project to support vital childhood cancer research. Every book submitted will also be made available for free to kids in hospitals around Australia."
