TERM 1 INTERSCHOOL SPORT WRAP UP

Well done to all teams that went out on Interschool Sport to represent Koonung! We had a total of 29 teams across eight sports compete in the Whitehorse Division in Term 1, with four teams making it to the Eastern Metropolitan Region competitions later this year. Below is a summary of those sports from the t (with special mentions to students who represented our school values) as well as photos of their competitions.

 

Intermediate Boys Cricket – February 16

The team won all of their matches for the day, winning the final against East Doncaster SC and making their way through to the EMR competition to be held on17  October later this year. I would  like to give a special mention to Tarkyn and Harvey who made 57 runs in six overs to win the final! We look forward to hearing about your results in the EMR! – Mrs Hodson and Ms Ryan 

 

Intermediate Tennis – February 16

Boys and Girls A teams were placed 2nd overall, with the Boys B1 playing undefeated and coming 1st in the B competition. Boys B2 won one match, with the other being forfeited by the opposition.

 

I would like to give a big shout out  to Izzy, Parsa, Callan and Angie, who demonstrated the value of excellence throughout the competition, best performing players, and excellent sportspersonship. Well done to all that played! – Mr Tozer 

 

Intermediate Mixed Baseball – February  20 

Three games were played with all students doing a great job! Hugo took the catch of the day, with Tarkyn being a standout across the day and Jude leading the team well. Well done team! – Mr Dickman 

 

Intermediate Volleyball – February 20

Boys A team won one game and lost two, and the Boys B team won two games and lost one. The boy’s volleyball teams showed excellent teamwork on the court. They communicated strategies, planned their positions and rotations, and supported each other through every point, won or lost. In addition to some unbelievable spikes, blocks and serves, each team showed cohesion amongst all players and resilience when games didn’t go their way. Well done to all teams on the day – Miss Brugliera 

 

The Girls A team won two games and lost one, with Girls B team losing all matches. All teams showed fantastic collaboration off and on the court, creating their own game plan and working really well as a team. Well done to Kinly, Caitie, Phoebe, Olivia, Grace, Gypsy, Hazel and Jessie! – Miss Voss 

 

Senior Netball – February 27 

Girls and Boys B team had two wins and two losses in some tough games. Boys A had three wins and one loss!

 

Lucas, Russell and Bridget were standouts for endeavour, respect and excellence. Abby, Jessica, Swathi and Ella were standouts for collaboration and excellence. Congratulations to all players on a great day – Mrs Howe and Mrs Thomas 

 

Senior Tennis – February 27

Our Mixed Tennis B1 team won all of their games and Mixed B2 team had no wins for the day. Dominic, Toby and Jim worked hard in a team of only three players, by playing some singles/doubles twice to ensure the opposition did not miss out on a match. They also won all of their matches, well done! – Mr Tozer 

 

Senior Volleyball – March 5

Congratulations to our Girls A team who won all of their games to make it through to the EMR competition on 25 March with only five players! We wish them luck on the day. Well done to all of our Boys teams who competed enthusiastically throughout the day and demonstrated excellence in their skills and respect/collaboration in their sportsmanship. - Mr Ghobrial and Miss Voss 

 

 

Senior Mixed Hockey – March 5

Congratulations to our Girls A team who won all of their games to make it through to the EMR competition on the 25th of March with only five players! We wish them luck on the day. Well done to all of our Boys teams who competed enthusiastically throughout the day and demonstrated excellence in their skills and respect/collaboration in their sportsmanship. - Mr Ghobrial and Miss Voss 

 

 

Whitehorse Division Swimming – March 8 

Congratulations to all our Koonung students who represented the college at the Whitehorse Division Swimming Championships. Koonung placed 2nd overall on points for the day with a total of 614 points gained from the 34 student who competed.

 

A big congratulations to Cici Lu and William Thraves who both achieved Age Group Champions in U16 and U15 respectively. William also broke a 12 year old record for the 100m Freestyle with a time of 1:02.49! We look forward to seeing 11 students (who placed first) go through to the next round at the Eastern Metropolitan Region Championships.

 

Year 8 Volleyball – March 13

With four teams playing a total of 16 games, it was safe to say that students perfected their digging, setting and most importantly serving throughout the day. There were some close games from all teams, with lots of celebrations when we won a point, set or match!

Shout outs to Isabella, Fotini and Molly in out Girls team for fabulous serving, setting and digging throughout the day. In our Boys A team, Ethan and Terence demonstrated fantastic strategy and court movement. In the Boys B team, Hunter and Jun were an unstoppable pair, scoring plenty of points through their teamwork. Finally, a shout out to Jason, Eric, Oscar, Jamie and Yi Yang in the Boys C team who played the entire day with only five players. Outstanding work by all students! – Miss Murray and Mis Allender

 

Year 7 Softball/Baseball – March 19 

Congratulations to our Softballers who won their game yesterday and have made it to the next round in November. In the their game they scored the maximum amount of home runs, with shout outs to Madeleine and Abigail, who displayed excellent skills throughout the match.

 

Our baseballers had three close games, winning one and losing two. Shout out to Haydn who helped coach the team and give support to the other students. Well done to all who competed! - Mr Dunn and Mr Ewart

 

Year 7 Volleyball – March 19 

With only two wins throughout the day, our four Year 7 Volleyball teams represented Koonung with lots of enthusiasm and resilience (especially on their sore digging arms). We were so impressed by their organisation in scoring each of their games, and their support of their teammates throughout the day.

 

I would like to give special mention to Cooper, Zac and Tashi (from the Boys team) who demonstrated excellent serving, digging and setting technique throughout the day. In our Girls A team, Olivia and Alexa had fantastic movement across the court, and in our Girls B team Noa and Aelwynn perfected their serving to help their team win the third set of their match against East Doncaster! Finally, our Girls C team fought hard throughout the day but remained enthusiastic with their support of each other. Shout outs to Mira and Donya for their excellent serving, and Zoe for her respect of her teammates. – Miss Murray and Mrs Asvestas

2024 Victorian Indoor State Team Selection Trials are now open for registrations.

 

There will be two open trials on 28 April and 5 May at the State Volleyball Centre, Dandenong Stadium, for men and women seeking selection to the Victorian U19 and U23 representative teams to compete at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC). The AJVC will be held in Adelaide, South Australia, 11-14 July, 2024. Click here for more information, details, costs, and to register.

 

There will be open trials on 12 (boys) and 19 May (girls) at the State Volleyball Centre, Dandenong Stadium, for boys and girls seeking selection to the Victorian U14, U15, U16, U17, and U18 representative teams to compete at the Australian Youth Volleyball Championships (AYVC). Successful athletes will then be invited to two additional closed trials on 26 May and 2 June. The AYVC will be held in Bendigo, Victoria, 15-20 September, 2024.
