STEM

We have had a few busy weeks in STEM with students continuing to develop their scientific knowledge, creativity, problem-solving and engineering skills.

Prep–2 students have been tracking the growth of their bean plants, observing the stages from seed and germination through to sprout and seedling. They have also continued using the Engineering Design Process to solve fairytale problems, designing and building solutions to help Rapunzel safely escape her tower and Jack escape the giant at the top of the beanstalk.

Years 3–6 have been developing their coding skills through a new program, coding their own Commonwealth Games events, including running and swimming races. They then explored the program through their own free-choice coding projects, allowing them to experiment, create and develop their programming skills.

All students have also been learning about water as an important Earth resource, linking with their learning in Art. They explored how people use water, how water moves through the environment and the ways water can be wasted. Students discussed how we can all become Water Heroes and make every drop count! They then put their creativity and problem-solving skills to work by designing their own solutions, inventions or ideas to help save water, reduce water waste and conserve this precious resource.

As part of National Science Week, students across the school also contributed to a special whole-school STEM display, reflecting on their favourite STEM topics and learning experiences. It has been fantastic to see the wide range of STEM interests represented across our school! Keep an eye out for a photo of our whole-school display in the next newsletter!
