Year 4W has tackled Single Paragraph Outlines (SPOs) in our writing.

Students learnt about Australia’s most iconic mega-structures—from the Big Banana to the Giant Lobster—and looked at some famous tourist's regions of Australia before looking at the history of communications. The kids organised their research into clear, structured topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusions. By breaking down huge topics into bite-sized planning frames, their writing became sharper and clearer.

Ask your child which "Big Thing" they chose, which form of communication used Morse Code or why you go to Ningaloo Reef - and how their SPO helped them map out their ideas!

Ellie on the Barossa Valley

Barossa Valley is just located outside of Adelaide and it is Australia’s most famous winery. There are lots of wineries in Barossa Valley and there are up to 150 wineries in that one place, around it are hotels you can hire but different types like romantic or a family pack. At the winery you can enter to do a wine school and you can also buy lots of food and drinks, they have one of the most rarest wines in Australia and also you don’t even have to go for the wine or anything. You can also see the rolling grass fields and some people can afford these really expensive hotels. In Barossa Valley they have some really cool festivals like the wine festival and also a scarecrow comp.

Lily on Ningaloo Reef

Ningaloo Reef is located in Western Australia and attracts much tourism. At Ningaloo Reef there are 300 different types of coral. If you go scuba diving you can go see dolphins, rays, small sharks, lots of tropical fish and whale sharks. You can go hiking, scuba diving and stay at a caravan park or holiday house. Exmouth is reliant on tourism. If you were a tourist would you like to visit Ningaloo Reef ?

Ruby on the Gold Coast

Gold Coast is a tourist region where tourists stay. It is located in the South east of Queensland. It is known for its beaches and theme parks. Gold Coast spends lots of money on theme parks and new places for

tourists. The city is right next to the water. The first theme park in the Gold Coast started in the 1960s now it is a Timezone that has had millions of dollars spent on it.

Barry on the telegraph

The Telegraph Cable was a device from the 1800s and changed the world forever. It works

by sending electrical pulses going through a wire from city to city or country to country. 3 people created the first Telegraph Cable, including Samuel Morse. Samuel Morse created the language of morse code. There were short and long pulses later known as dots and dashes. Famous cables such as the Transatlantic Cable stretched between Europeand America. Dots and dashes have had improvements such as making E a single dot,or how SOS was made using it, which lead to it being used all over the world. In Australia,poles with cables were used to connect Darwin and Adelaide, then Great Britain. Before thetelegraph cable, letters would have to be used, taking weeks and weeks to get to yourdestination. The Telegraph Cable was the first of instant communication.
