Year 2 Update

Week 3 and 4 of Learning in Year 2, Term 3

Over the past two weeks, students have continued to engage enthusiastically in a variety of learning experiences across the curriculum. A highlight of the fortnight has been our Swimming Program, with students attending lessons each Wednesday morning and developing their confidence and skills in the water.

In Phonics, students explored a range of spelling patterns and letter combinations. They learnt to read and spell words containing silent letter combinations including gh, rh, wh, ch, sc and st, as well as common words with less familiar silent letters such as autumn, Wednesday, two and answer. Students also practised reading and spelling words, phrases and sentences containing silent letters, including words such as who, hour and island. They further developed their phonics knowledge by learning to read and spell words with dge as in judge, words where g and ge represent the /j/ sound, and words where o and ou represent the /u/ sound, such as son and cousin.

In Text Study, students continued building their understanding of information texts. They learnt how to navigate digital texts to locate information and identify facts. Students planned, drafted, edited and revised their own information texts, using note-taking strategies to organise their ideas. They also compared fiction and non-fiction texts, practised writing factual sentences, used images to support comprehension and created captions for pictures within non-fiction texts.

In Mathematics, our learning remained focused on subtraction. Students used their knowledge of number facts to ten to identify related subtraction facts and explored how addition facts can help solve subtraction problems. They also investigated backwards doubles, using their understanding of double facts to strengthen subtraction fluency and confidence.

In Inquiry, students continued investigating how designed products and environments meet people's needs. They explored how technologies create movement and examined how different materials can affect the way objects move. Through discussions and investigations, students considered how design choices help products and environments function effectively and meet the needs of different people.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students learnt about the importance of fairness, inclusion and equal opportunities for all. They explored why everyone deserves a fair chance to participate and be included and discussed how people should have the same opportunities regardless of whether they are a boy or a girl. These conversations encouraged students to think about ways they can create a respectful, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone at school.

We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort students have shown throughout Weeks 2 and 3 and look forward to seeing their learning continue to grow throughout the term.
