Subject Name: Physical Education

Unit of Study:  Pre VCE PE

Brief Description: This is an introduction to VCE Physical Education. Through theoretical and practical activities, students explore the relationships between the body systems and physical activity, sport and exercise, and how the systems adapt and adjust to the demands of activity when training to improve fitness components. Students critique the effectiveness of the implementation of training principles and methods to meet the needs of the individual and will undertake and evaluate a training program that they have designed.

Scaffolding Learning

At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have:

An understanding of key knowledge

  • Muscles and Bones, Respiratory and Circulatory systems

  • Determine an appropriate fitness testing regime based on the needs of the individual and the requirements of the activity

  • Develop and implement training program principles, including frequency, intensity, time, type, progression, specificity, individuality, diminishing returns, variety, maintenance, overtraining and detraining

  • Training methods including continuous, interval (short, intermediate, long and high intensity), fartlek, circuit, weight/resistance, flexibility and plyometrics

Attained these key skills

  • Use and apply correct anatomical terminology to identify the structures and function of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems

  • Design a training program that demonstrates the correct application of training principles and methods to enhance and/or maintain fitness components

  • Evaluate and critique the effectiveness of different training programs

Demonstrated the Victorian curriculum standards and capabilities

  • Moving the body
  • Understanding movement
  • Learning through movement

Assessment Tasks

Students will be required to complete the following assessment tasks:

  • Laboratory Reports
  • Student Workbook
  • Fitness Training Program
  • Unit Test

Resources

  • Physical Education uniform
  • This elective is primarily theory-based and is complemented by practical laboratory sessions, as well as a five-week structured training program.
