Unit of Study: Life 101: Health Essentials
Brief Description: Students explore mental and social health topics including mental health and illness, respectful relationships and boundaries, and the effects and risks of alcohol and drugs. This course also explores practical health promotion strategies to promote positive health and wellbeing and improve health literacy throughout life.
At the conclusion of this unit of study students will have:
An understanding of key knowledge
- Understand the mental health continuum, common mental health challenges and illnesses, protective factors, and how internal and external influences shape body image and self-esteem.
- Understand the physical, social, and legal risks associated with alcohol, vaping, and drug use, as well as principles of harm reduction and party safety.
- Understand how individuals and communities design, evaluate, and implement effective health promotion strategies to foster wellbeing across life stages.
Attained these key skills
- Students can analyze how social, media, environmental, and biological factors influence mental health outcomes and personal health choices.
- Students can apply harm minimisation strategies, boundary-setting techniques, and first-aid principles to assess and manage real-world risks, such as substance use and social safety.
- Students can identify, evaluate, and recommend accessible support services, coping strategies, and referral pathways for themselves and peers in times of distress.
