Mathematics – Term 3
It has been a very busy and exciting term in Mathematics at St Peter’s! Our students have embraced a range of opportunities to develop their mathematical skills, confidence and problem-solving abilities.
Our Morning Maths Program has continued to support students in building their number fluency and confidence through regular practice and activities with our Year 6 student tutors. It has been wonderful to see students working together and encouraging each other as they develop their skills.
Our Year 5 and 6 students also had the opportunity to participate in Maths Games Day, where they worked collaboratively to solve a range of challenging mathematical problems and puzzles. Students demonstrated great teamwork, persistence and creativity throughout the day.
Students have also participated in the APSMO Maths Olympiad, GATEWAYS Mathematics programs and the Australian Mathematics Competition. These opportunities have challenged students to think deeply, apply different strategies and persevere when faced with unfamiliar problems.
It has certainly been a busy term of Mathematics, and we would like to congratulate all of our students on the effort, enthusiasm and persistence they have shown. Whether working in the classroom, attending a maths program or tackling a challenging competition problem, our students should be proud of their achievements this term.

Literacy
As we approach the end of another busy term, we have much to celebrate in the area of Literacy. In Term 3 we celebrated Book Week, with this year’s theme being Symphony of Stories. Annette Bainbridge brought this to life in the library, dressed as a different character each day. The students paraded around in their finest costumes and stories were shared and investigated. Karen Young also ran the Book Fair. As a result of her hard work and your wonderful support, we were able to receive $3800 of free books for the library.
We had some students participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, and would like to thank those parents who read to and with their children and ensured the books were entered and verified. This is a great challenge that encourages our students to read and record what they have been reading.
We entered a team in the Write a Book in a Day initiative, where ten students work collaboratively for twelve hours to write a book together. This initiative is to encourage writing, reward students who have a talent in this area and to raise funds for the Kids Cancer Project. A huge effort by this group of students to prepare for and participate in this wonderful opportunity.
The learning and teaching focus in the area of Literacy has continued to be on the development of explicit teaching and learning of skills and knowledge. It is wonderful to see continued professional development and practice by the amazing staff at St Peter’s. Even more wonderful to observe is the engagement of our students in their Literacy learning.
