Year 5/6 Report

Reading

This term in Reading, students will re-establish our classroom reading expectations and routines while building a personal library of engaging and appropriate texts to support their independent reading journey. Students will set individual reading goals and monitor their progress throughout the term, developing a growth mindset by embracing challenges, persisting with difficult texts and recognising that reading skills improve through effort and practice. Our genre focus for the term is Historical Fiction, where students will explore how authors combine real events, settings and time periods with fictional characters and stories to deepen both their comprehension skills and understanding of history.

Writing

In Writing, students will develop a growth mindset by viewing challenges as opportunities to learn and understanding that strong writing develops through practice, feedback and perseverance. Students will use their Writer's Notebook to collect ideas, experiment with writing techniques and record observations and inspirations for future pieces. Our genre focus for the term is Historical Fiction, where students will explore how authors combine accurate historical settings, events and details with fictional characters and narratives to create engaging and believable stories of the past. In addition, students will collating their published pieces of work, in readiness for our school's Writer's Festival in week 8.

Maths

This term in Mathematics, students will continue developing their multiplicative thinking by exploring a range of multiplication concepts and strategies. They will learn how multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 affects numbers, develop efficient multiplication strategies to solve problems, and investigate factors to deepen their understanding of number relationships. Through hands-on activities, problem-solving tasks, and real-world applications, students will build confidence, accuracy, and fluency in their mathematical thinking.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry/History, students will explore the arrival of the First Fleet and the establishment of the first British colony in Australia. They will investigate the reasons for colonisation, examine what life was like during the early years of the colony, and consider the challenges faced by different groups of people. Students will also explore the impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, developing an understanding of how this significant period shaped Australia's history from multiple perspectives. Later in the term, students will investigate the Australian gold rush, exploring how the discovery of gold influenced population growth, migration, and the development of communities across Australia.
