Year 1/2 Report

English 

Reading 

This term, students in Grade 1 and 2 will build their nonfiction reading skills, learning to identify and use text features such as titles, contents pages, headings, diagrams, captions, and glossaries. Through guided reading and shared texts, students will explore the purpose of these features and how they support a reader, while also drawing on prior knowledge to make predictions. 

Writing 

In writing, students will begin with a holiday recount before moving into animal reports. They will learn to record facts from non-fiction mentor texts; group related facts under the right headings and use topic specific vocabulary. By the end of the unit, students will create their own information text, choosing to present it as a poster, book, or recording to share with the cohort. Students will also continue to build their grammar skills, learning to write question sentences, edit for boundary punctuation, and identify adverbs of time, place, and manner. 

Phonics 

Students will continue to participate in the phonics program, UFLI, to support their reading and spelling development. Through these lessons, they will practice identifying sounds, blending and segmenting words, and applying spelling patterns to support both reading and writing.  

Mathematics 

In mathematics, students will focus on multiplicative thinking, building their understanding of multiplication and division, and how these two operations relate to one another. Students will explore concepts such as equal groups, arrays, and sharing collections equally, developing strategies to solve problems efficiently rather than relying on counting by ones. They will connect these skills to real life contexts, such as sharing items between friends, arranging objects into rows and columns, and solving everyday problems that involve grouping and sharing. 

Inquiry 

In Inquiry, students will explore Now and Then, an inquiry into how family life in Australia has changed over the space of a few generations. Students will examine their own families and investigate how new technology has shaped Australian life, including comparing games from before electronic games to the games children play today. This unit has a curriculum focus on History and Digital Technologies. 

SEL 

This term, students will focus on building a positive and cooperative classroom community. They will start the term by re-establishing classroom routines. Students will also explore what cooperation, teamwork and fairness through discussion, stories, and games that help them work well with each other. They will continue developing respectful behavior, positive relationships and the skills needed to make good choices in the classroom and in the yard. 

Reminders 

School starts every morning at 8.50am. It is essential that students are at school by 8.50 am as phonics lessons start at 9am sharp. Coming to school late even 10 mins each day means your child is missing important literacy instruction every day.
