Keep Australia Beautiful

Every August, for over 50 years, Keep Australia Beautiful have been educating Australians about litter, waste and other key environmental issues during Keep Australia Beautiful week. They aim to engage and challenge the community, while encouraging long term change behaviour that can be adopted well after the week is done. So do the Climate Canons, who hosted the golden rubbish treasure hunt, a bin it right challenge and a nature quest mini golf game. Well done to all the students who go involved.

Wastesorted Student Meet

This year’s Wastesorted Student Meet was the biggest yet, with the Climate Canons attending Aquinas College along with 24 other schools to learn all about the great ways students are making a difference in their schools. This event is designed for high school students and staff who drive change in waste, recycling and sustainability at their school. 

It was a great opportunity for students to hear directly from their peers about successful initiatives and how they’ve implemented them. The day included student presentations, a guest speaker from Urban Revolution, a tour of Aquinas College waste and recycling initiatives and a sustainability expo. Our four Climate Canons representatives, Niamh N, Caitlin N, Alcie I and Olivier W S, did an excellent job of asking questions and making contacts and gained a lot from the experience.

Laudato Si Youth Summit

The Laudato Si' Youth Summit is inspired by the Encyclical Laudato Si', written in 2015 by the late Pope Francis. It was an opportunity for like-minded students to come together in the spirit of caring for our common home. 

In preparation for the Summit, Climate Canons and Student Ministry students put forward the topics they wanted to see addressed on the day. Based on that input, a series of expert presenters offered their knowledge and expertise over three sessions to make up their morning programme. These included Human-Centred AI - Young Voices for Our Common Home, Listening to Country - First Nations Wisdom and the call of Laudato Si’, Think Before You Throw! and Water for Today and Tomorrow.

The afternoon sessions involved putting into action what students had learnt. Held at Corpus Christi, the event offered students an opportunity to develop SNC’s Laudato Si plan for the future.

Thank you to Mr Sebastian Graf for driving the bus and Ms Cecilia Loh and Fr John for accompanying the students. Our Year 10 and 11 students were excellent ambassadors of the College and are truly living the College motto of "Prepared for all Good Works”.
